Second multi pin electrical socket for towing

What is the second multi pin socket at the back of the vehicle used for? Dont know too much about towing, but have never seen this on other vehicles?
I am thinking of going the off-road trailer route, but how do i get power to the trailer for dual batteries?
Is it safe to raise the suspension with the trailer connected or is there something i need to be aware of?
