Second replacement Turbo required, is this a record?
I have just suffered the dreaded "Engine system fault" and reduction in power etc for the second time in the life of my 2005 SE Auto. This has had a much bigger impact on me than last time as it is no longer under warranty and nothing focuses the mind more than an unexpected bill for £1800 for a new Turbo!
I am assured by my servicing garage that I am just unlucky and that they have never had to do a second turbo replacement on a D3!
Still I am a little disappointed that after the first replacement turbo at 16600 miles, I have to pay for a second one at 30700 miles.
Out of interest, has anyone in the DISCO3 world had two failed Turbo's?

First I've heard of but no doubt you won't be the last! Cynic, moi??
Will be interesting to see when the D4 turbos start going, tails of turbo replacement already on The Dark Side!

Get your D3 to an independent, they are a lot cheaper and a good one will sort in no problem.

I know it is well out of warranty, but I would call that totally unacceptable, and would be talking to LR about this.
I can't remember thet proper words/name for it, but there is a bit in the sale of goods act that covers things that are out of warranty but break in an unusually short time. Don't know if it applies to cars, but I can't see why not. If I remember right, it would be down to you to prove that it has failed before reasonably expected.

get an AA warranty £340 per year includes roadside assisstance and recovery, covers the turbo and a lot more (but not everything) wear and tear as well if under 60k miles and 5 years old. If you get independant garage to service car then this warranty is virtually paid for with the saving........sorry about your bad luck....

Yes, I have had 2 Turbos.
My car had a replacement Turbo last May, and began giving Engine System fault messages in September again.
Taggarts did stall a couple of times with various tall tales of "cleaning" out of Turbo!!!! before I wrote the sorry saga down on a piece of paper and asked for a half hour of the Service manager's time.
He immediately did some digging and it transpired my car had been fitted with a sevice replacement , rather than brand new turbo.
New Turbo ordered , fitted , and touch wood, the car feels better than ever.
Contact LR Customer services, explain the situation, they might contribute. Also , ask about a favourable labour rate, and contact TLO for the correct part number of the latest turbo, and the best price for it.
Good luck, I know what a dissappointing feeling you are experiencing.

Thank you for the replies. I have got a good independant LR specialist taking care of this car, so I would hate to think how much a dealer would charge for the repair. I will try and find out if the part fitted under warrant was a new turbo or a referbished one. I am not sure if LR customer care would consider helping out in that case? I looked into the trading standards route regarding "fit for purpose" etc but you apparently only have a case against the dealership not the manufacturer. Sadly shen your luck is out it's really out. Heathwood Landrovers no longer exist!!!

Just a quick update and an opinion about LR customer care, I did contact them and point out that two turbo failures on a 5 year old vehicle that had done 30,000 miles with a full service history must be unique enough for them to perhaps take a little responsibility for the fault and provide some sort of assistance by way of a discount on the replacement turbo etc? Bearing in mind that in it's life there have been some 20+ warranty issues with this vehicle, so the car's a bit of a £39,000 dog!
Well, the nice lady, "Alison" i think, said she would get back to me with an answer to that question, ( she was also very sorry I was having problems) so that was okay then, Alison? was sorry!.
Today I spoke to my garage to let them know I am still waiting for a reply from customer care, only to be informed that CC already contacted my garage yesterday and informed them that there is nothing they are willing to do about this problem!
Nice, if they actually bother to ring, e-mail or send me a letter to actually let me know this then I will ask them what they actually understand by the term " customer care " still at least the garage have been informed, me the customer can just sit and wait for inspiration. I mean how hard is it to contact someone these days who carries a phone around 24hrs a day!
Looking into a new turbo by KKK/BorgWarner from a turbo specialist now, it seems that LR mark up the same new units by several hundred pounds! I guess having LR stamped on it must increase it's value. I don't feel inclined to give LR any proffit by buying from them.
I wish the Government scrappage scheme was still in place, I would go for a KIA with a 7 year warranty, that seems like great self confidence in a product.
