I know there have been lots of similar threads - so please forgive me if we are going over old ground 
I have recently spent a few hours slipping all over the LRE site in Snowdonia on my standard Scorpions (255/60/R18)  so was thinking of getting a second set of wheels just for off road use.
I've read through the LR magazines but 99% of the adverts are for 16inch and i believe that these won't fit my '56 plate SE??
So what can I fit that will perform well off road  , won't cost the earth  and also won't invalidate any warranty / insurance  ???
Will TD5 wheels fit - there seems to be loads of them on fleabay??
PS i'm not bothered what they look like as they will only be on for mucky off road stuff.

Hi frenchy,
I would suggest scouring the forum and fleabay ( ) for a set of 18" wheels of a D3, There are some about, not too expensive, some with tyres, some without. The main thing is to get the right load rating for the wheels.
I just picked up 4 10spoke 18" with 2 nearly new and 2 slightly more used, Scorpions on them.
The choice of 18" tyres in AT and MT is very good and prices reasonable, especially, if you are only wanting them for play days....
I just had General AT2's fitted to mine and they are on ready for Tong next weekend.
Intend to run them full time as they have a softer side wall that the 19" Scorpions and give a slightly smoother ride. No marked difference in road noise and anyway the CD drowns that out 
Had AT2's fitted to my 300 Series 1 and ran them full time too. Good wear rate and I would recommend them to anyone. 
Tyres is very much personal choice, guys on the forum seem to run all sorts of makes / sizes according to personal preference use...

Frenchy - given the state of the ground you did excellently (  ) but I agree a second set of wheels or a set of AT / MT tyres for your present rims would be better for off-road.
I'm running 17" wheels with BFG AT and I'm happy with them.
The only thing I would say is make sure you get a set of 5 (or 6 possibly?) - my 17" with AT are bigger than my HSE 19" with Wrangler HP so no chance of using my existing spare..... I see no ships........

I would guess that it's only worth getting a second set of wheels if you're going to fit some chunky MT tyres.
A good option would be to just fit some decent AT tyres to your existing 18" wheels and run them full-time. I have some Grabber AT2's and would recommend them 100% for both on and off-road use.
Any AT tyre will suffer in seriously muddy conditions, although they'll be much better than your Scorpions.
If you're going to take the trouble to get another set of wheels, look for some MT tyres, you'll get much more benefit than fitting AT tyres 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Thanks for all the tips ,I'm in no particular hurry (as I've missed out on the Tong-thing ) but i'd like to see the difference the new rubber will make if I can make it onto Spiderbaby's LRE Bala D3 day out.
Things are made slightly more complicated by the fact that I just splurged out £300 on 2 new front tyres 
I'll will keep looking on fleabay to see if I can pick up a bargain - so MT are better than AT for purely off road use then??

All Terrain - clue in title. Jack of all trades, master of none.
Mud terrain - designed for off road use, think the STT says 80% off road / 20% road Damn fine choice too "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

They sound great - but what sizes would fit the disco as I'll have to get wheels to match........... if that doesn't sound too dumb

STT's as run by chris tyler, Discodunc and me, to name but three. Best bit, cheaper than MTR's and go on the cheapest of all rims, the bog standard 17" base alloys
Should get a set for about £100 / £120 from here, ebay or even local dealer. AJS for best price on the tyres "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Frenchy, i'm also looking to do the same as you - get a second set for off roading. There's loads of 19" rims off RRS's on fleabay going for aroun £200/set of 4 which i think is a bargain.
i'm looking at putting MTR's on - got a set on a 110 defender and they perform brilliantly.
Also - MTR's on 19's look the mutts nuts
