Selecting Low Range

Ok I may be being a numpty here, but the other day when anticipating a bit of snow I flicked the low range selector to select low range, however the indicator light stubbornly stays on high range, no matter what terrain setting I select or whether I am in N,P or D.

Likewise, when I want access height it doesn't lower itself but it will raise itself quite happily only to lower itself again to normal road height when above the stated speed.

Be gentle......

England

you have to be in nuetral for low range selection - when you say flicked, was it just a flick, or did you try holding it in the low range position?

ARN, did you have your foot on the brake? (applies to high-low change)

Changing from HIGH to LOW on the move
Automatic transmission - With the vehicle
slowing down and travelling NO FASTER THAN
40 km/h (24 mph), select N.
Manual transmission - With the vehicle slowing
down and travelling NO FASTER THAN 20 km/h
(12 mph), depress the clutch and select
neutral.
Pull the transfer gear switch fully rearwards to
the LOW position and release it.
Indication of the range change status is the
same as for the Stationary method.
When the range change is confirmed by the
indicators, select D or the most appropriate
manual gear for the vehicle speed.
With automatic transmission an interlock
prevents selection of a drive gear until the
range change is complete. With manual
transmission, if a gear is selected before the
range change is complete, the change will
cancel and may leave the transfer box in
neutral. An audible warning will be given if this
happens.
A failed range change condition produces loss
of drive, and attempting to move the vehicle in
this state is not possible. After a failed range
change, it will be necessary to reselect neutral
in the main gearbox and request the range
change again in the normal way.
Changing from LOW to HIGH on the move
With the vehicle travelling NO FASTER THAN
60 km/h (38 mph), select N or neutral. Press
the front of the transfer gear switch to the HIGH
position and release it.
Indication of the range change status is the
same as for the stationary method.
Now select D or the most appropriate manual
gear for the vehicle speed.

from the owners manual.

...and from the "Off Road Driving" manual:

Stationary method
With the vehicle stationary and the engine running, apply the foot brake and move the
automatic gearbox selector to the N (neutral) position before pressing the appropriate
portion of the transfer gear switch - press the forward arrow to select High range and press
the rearward arrow to select Low range. When the switch is released, it returns to the central
position. While the vehicle is in High range, the range indicator in the instrument pack display is
extinguished and the High range indicator in the switch is illuminated. The range indicator in the instrument pack illuminates continuously to act as a reminder that Low range is engaged. It flashes to indicate a range change in progress and extinguishes once the vehicle is in High range.

Hello Catweasel - have just tried the stationary method as per the book engine running, foot in brake, gear in N) - nothing doing - stays in the high range position.

Biz the whole point of using the brake initially is so the safety pin can be disengaged from the selector lever whilst in the park position so you can select another gear. the footbrake (apart from selecting neutral or maintining station whilst in drive) should not affect the range change. I do mine whilst on the move usually.

Arn what does the message centre tell you. does it even try to do a range change as per my post (flashing lights and bongs). does it say N in the message centre?

Thumbs Up <educated>

ARN, assuming no messages appear given you don't mention them, if I were you I'd go down the dealer route... at the very least they'll be able to read any faults that may be causing your symptoms...

out of warranty vehicle and could be costly. if no messages or bongs I would speculate that the switch itself is at fault as it will normally tell you off if you dont do it right.

In reply to Biz, I can only select the ride height as 'raised' then have to wait for the car to lower itself when it goes above 30mph - I cannot manually lower the car to 'access' although it lowers itself when the car is locked.

Are you sure it lowers itself to access height (or have I got your comment wrong)? Normally it would just level out after a few seconds of being still (locked or not I think). It should stay at the last height position you leave it at.

It could very well be faulty electrics with the switches as it seems the common symptom is the "push backwards" position from what you are saying. Good thing you got that extended warranty then Wink

Do let us know what it was when you find out Confused
