Sell or Keep
Hi all, I find myself at a crossroads. I’ve had my Disco 4 for just shy of seven years now. She’s done 127,000 miles and still runs very nicely. I’m the second owner.
At the time of purchase she was exactly what I wanted, a D4 3.0V6 but no DPF, so no chance of any of the issues they sometimes present.
I had the belts done early, just in case, at about 93,000 and Bodsy flushed and replaced the transmission fluid a few years ago. He did both diffs too at the same time.
The worst issue she’s had is a cracked inlet manifold, anything else has just been typical wear and tear (I guess that was too, really).
So why the crossroads?
Well, like all of us she isn’t getting any younger. I do, in times without a certain pesky virus about, about 8,000 miles a year. I realise that there is the potential for many miles of (fairly) trouble free motoring possible, but I’m starting to feel a bit twitchy about the increased risks and decreased value if I were to keep her for, say, another five years/40k miles.
I’m not mechanically minded so any upkeep/issues sorting is done at my local garage.
I’m interested - please don’t break out the tar and feathers straight away as it’s not a Disco - in having a few years with an L322 RR before they get too old. I’d get the likes of a 4.4 TDV8 on 70/80k.
So, recognising this is a Disco group, and you may be just a tad biased, what does the team think? Sell or Keep?
Cheers,
Stockers

A friend of mine has changed from an early Non DPF D4 which he owned for years to an L322 TDV8 because he fancied a bit of V8 action.

Prices for Disco's are very strong at the moment, prices for older RR's not so much... would be a good time to change if that's your plan.
I know people with the older L322 and they have had a multitude of issues but I guess the same could be said for the Discos... personally I'd say "better the devil you know".... but sometimes it's not such an easy choiceI want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Exactly where I was at after about 7 years and although my D4 had been largely faultless it just seemed time to move on. Although the FFRR is missing a lot of what the D4 offered, it partly makes up for it in other areas
No regrets here, overall. Why not try something new for a change D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

This was a question I had been asking for a year or two now, as it had always been my intention to keep my D4 until something obscenely expensive went wrong!
However, about 3 weeks ago I became the owner of a Volvo XC70 and my D4 is sadly up for sale Andy

Could you keep the D4 and buy an L322?
With hindsight, I wish I had kept my last D4 as well as buying a FFRR.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Thanks for everyone’s thoughts.
Having done still more thinking of my own I’ve bought a RRS, so although it’s bye bye to this forum I’m still in the LR fold….
…not that there was ever much doubt about that!
