How to sell privately?

Not sure where to ask this really, but looking to sell our D4 MY11, 12 plate HSE and wondering how you go about setting a realistic price please?

Also interested in how I would be able to let a prospective buyer have a test drive; insurance being the main concern.

Any pointers, help, guidance greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Andy

There is some additional points to be aware of here too:
https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/a...-privately

I would agree the buyers insurance should be "open" and cover the test drive. However they might not currently own a car/insurance, and so you might want to get advice from your insurer.

As for the price, have a look at private ads online which will help you gauge the value of your own car based on age, condition, and mileage etc. Best of luck with the sale Thumbs Up

Be aware that most insurance that do cover drivers to driver other cars (a lot don't these days) only cover them 3rd party.

Autotrader have a simple car valuation tool - it's one way to get a guide:

Thumbs Up

But also, selling on here would be a very good idea - worth buying and add

I sold on here last week and as an enthusiast, it was great to get a buyer that was looking for a well cared for Disco hence they looked on here.

In terms of price, look at a range of sources and think if you need to make it more attractive to sell quickly like I did due to a new one on the way or whether you are prepared to wait longer.

Know what you are prepared to let it go for and importantly be realistic in your own valuation of your vehicle. If it's grubby and needs a lot of TLC then clearly you're not going to command the upper end of the range, equally full LR service history and any remaining warranty that can be transferred are also plus points.

Thumbs Up

You can buy insurance by the hour at not too bad a price if their insurance doesn’t cover, can be arranged in minutes.

Try WBAC as that would be the absolute rock bottom price you would take.

Hi,
as above ^ for pricing and ad on here Thumbs Up

As for insurance, as Russell has said its normally 3rd party only if they have it,
ask to see there policy it will be worded something like
"cover to drive other vehicles not owned or hire to"
if its not there they are Not covered, Your car Also Has to be insured at the time,
so if insurance swapped to new car already their again Not covered.
I have had a classic policy that did Not cover it and when I had a company car it did not cover anything that was not owned by the company
being named on another policy often does not count either as its for the "main/named" user only.

but after all that doom and gloom if yours is insured and they have the cover in writing all is good

(only time I have ever been asked for proof was buying a mini a couple of years back value about £2k turned up in our RRS value about £50k and she asked to see my insurance before I could test drive it,
it was a private sale and I dont blame her it was her pride and joy)

Thumbs Up

Sold my recently on Autotrader very quickly and easily (also advertised here). Didn’t worry about insurance for test drive as I would have just driven it myself but the buyer didn’t go for a drive so it wasn’t a problem anyway.

Was with Admiral awhile back, they didn’t cover me for other cars, Then with Ageas, they didn’t either, currently with Direct Line, and they don’t either, though it was offered with the policy but they revoked it due to working in transport, I might be asked to move a vehicle with no insurance Rolling Eyes
If you do have the option on the policy it normally is only valid if the vehicle you intend to drive is already insured by the owner.

Useful post - thanks for asking the questions as i am in the same boat!

Change of job/big increase in annual mileage means the reluctant sale of my 2015 HSE in the next couple of months...

Will have a good read around for pricing info Thumbs Up
