the car has no idea that i changed the oil, so that dilution rate must be accumulative since the last reset at it's main service, i'm guessing. It gives me the option to reset now but i haven't as yet. yes i did read trigger level is 6%

Yes that's right. It can't know.
It was quite high by look of it , so wouldn't be surprised if you were not getting the message service required. Perhaps you missed the mileage countdown, which would have occurred earlier.
Have you found an= 'oil service ' reset or is it ' service reset'. I've never managed to find the oil service only reset. Gary

Don't forget to check for fault codes in case there's something else going on. Gary

I think there should also be a ' miles to next service ' value too. Might also be a useful indicator ( should be zero based on what you've said). Gary

So, had a few faults but no faults relating to anything engine wise, miles to next service was 0 so your thinking was correct on that one. I've reset the service which has reset the oil dilution to 0.5%. I think it hasn't reset the next service reminder as it gave me the option not to but I know to be vigilant on when it needs doing next which will be a full service. Again thanks for your help and offers of help 👍

That’s good news. No problem. I’ve had so much help from this forum it’s nice to give a little back. I’m no expert by any means, but I’ve come to learn a bit about oil dilution. Keep an eye out for the service required countdown going forward.
I’m wondering if saying no to reset the next service reminder, is, in effect, the way to reset on an oil only service (as oil dilution gets reset, but distance to next service doesn’t)?
I believe you can just about get away without a second , oil only, service each year if you generally do long journeys only, but come to the conclusion it’s probably best just to do one anyway, for a relatively small outlay once you have the equipment ( vacuum extractor). Look out for ‘overfilled’ message on the oil level check on the service menu option from the dash (the option that includes a check of tyre pressures) as an indicator too. Initially this message is intermittent, but if it starts, you know what’s coming.
Cheers Gary

I just had this same issue yesterday in my 2016 SDV6 Ad blue engine model.
Car was serviced 4000miles ago and only 4 months and I get a message saying service need in 1200 miles.
Rang my trusty Indy garage. Explained my surprise, that I'm supposed to be driving to France in 2 days so they have it in now, checking for oil dilution.
Volume of oil according to the IID is correct at 5.9L. Not showing as overfilled.
It was not a case of them not resetting the service counter as the IID data proves they did. I guess worst case scenario they perform an interim oil chance for me but I don't think I want a vehicle that I have to have serviced every 6 months, just in case it doesn't like the journeys I'm doing or my driving style, that's frankly, ridiculous.
It's stuff like this that makes you think, wouldn't life be easier with a brand new Kia or something, 7 year warranty and servicing. You just own it, drive it, rather than fret how big the next bill will be. 1998 Defender 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF
