Hello
What should one be paying for a £48k service on a '62 D4 HSE?

I'm hoping my £599 (or was it £699) for the 5 year/50,000 mile service plan protects me from some of these costs - but as discussed elsewhere, I fear they'll make up the difference with non-included essentials like brakes, discs etc.MY16 D4 Graphite in Loire Blue

Brakes won't be included. Buy Genuine ones from Dan at Duckworths as they will be a lot cheaper than most main dealers.Visitor from fullfatrr.com

That's exactly what my last dealer did to me when I put it in, under the service plan, for the 32,000 mile service at 28,000 miles. I was quoted around £350 for new rear discs and pads, neither of which needed changing; the discs were barely worn and when the pads were removed, 1,000 miles later, they had 4mm left on each pad. The dealer had warned me that they were "down to the metal"!2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Get a price and when you take it in for the service, take your own previously purchased engine oil which you have bought from Advanced Factors (or dare I say Eurocarparts when they have their regular 30% off deals) and tell them to use that. When you come to pay, make sure their itemised engine oil from their standard service charge is removed. Watch out for the hidden "extras". When I went to drive my car away, they had left a litre of LR engine oil on the passenger seat. When I queried it, they said it was all part of the service in case I needed an intermediate top up. Returning that knocked another 20 quid or so off the service.
Also, they will try and charge you for full bottles of, for instance transmission oil, at retail price when they only need a small amount. Get them to give you the remains of the bottle which they haven't used for next time.
They also charged me for a sump plug and washer (ok, not expensive) and when I said I thought the engine oil was changed from above, they said, no, sometimes they do it from the bottom so they can have a good look round the bottom of the engine. When I looked under the car, it was obvious the engine protection plate had not been removed. This also meant they didn't see the continuing oil leak which I had previously reported to them when I purchased the car and they had allegedly fixed.
And as for the standard charge of £5+vat to top up your windscreen wash even although it was full when you took the car in - that really gets my goat.
Letter of complaint resulted in an apology and a £50 cheque as compensation.
PS. You can tell I'm a tight fisted Scot! Watch them like a hawk.

They are con artists. It depresses me how many customers get totally ripped off by these so called top class franchises. There should be a trading standards investigation but until more people report them, there won't be.

Next time I ask for a service quote, I will get them to complete the following form.
Vehicle Registration and type.....................................................
Service Required................................................................
Please quote your best price for the above service. Your price is to include labour and the cost of parts and consumables actually used for the service.
Any product used from retail type containers for which you charge for the retail container must be charged at a pro-rata basis OR the remainder of the product handed over to me after the service.
Charges for work not done or materials not used or not returned to the customer will not be accepted.
Labour cost. ............hours @ £ .................per hour.
Parts (itemise)
Total cost £........................inc.vat.

Transpired I needed a 60k(?) service since the car is 4 years old, although have done 48k miles. 16k, 32k, 48k, 64k... Should have been 64k service.
Anyway, managed to get price down a bit but not as much as another place round the corner who I will be going to next year instead.
Does the 5 year service option carry over on to used approved cars, by the way?
