Settled on the manual box, but then again...
Pretty much set my sights on a 2006/07 D3, the better the spec as possible but not too bothered on how the interior is as long as it's in great condition, sub 60k miles etc blah blah blah!
Decided on a manual gearbox as, having had a 2002 Td5 ES auto a few years ago just couldn't live with the awful lag from the off.
Need it as a towcar too, although the Bailey Ranger 500/5 I have is only 1350kg fully loaded so no problems there.
What I'm saying is, for those of you with the auto box, how do you find it under normal driving conditions?
Thanks,
Will

The Auto is excellant - perfect towing. if you want more control then the Command Shift delivers this.
For me its the Auto for sure. Duncan

Cheers dude
It's not so much the towing ability, more the day to day use.
Do you find it fine from a standing start?
My wife used to complain like hell she just didn't have the confidence at roundabouts in heavy traffic, such was the lag.
I knew what she meant, but I was more likely to floor it than my wife was

there is a small lag when you first pull away, but i dont think that is so much the auto box but the general turbo lag.
the auto box is very smooth and often you cant even tell its changed gear other than the change in revs
A remap eleminates that, give loads more power, more torq and better MPG (slightly) if you use the torq Duncan

Can't say there isn't some lag (my last vehicle was a manual diesel, Volvo V50) but I've never once thought it was a major problem pulling away at a junction..... but.... the lag is still there a little on a standard vehicle.
I'm told (correct me if I'm wrong anybody else) that the BAS remap does improve this and give much better response.... can anybody confirm this ???
I'm still an Auto convert though, didn't think I'd ever say that but I love it, and when necessary (most days) I slip into Command Shift to get that bit extra control (overtaking and steep inclines/descents).
There's simply no comparison in driving terms between a D3 diesel auto and D1/D2s of any age with auto. The D3 Auto is a fine drive, no really discernable auto "lag" (put it into S mode for town use and gain a small mpg improvement too). It's relaxing and adequately powered in D.
Others have remaps, I don't at the moment but may go that way next year, - however don't feel the need for it.
Manuals are cheaper to buy (and maybe harder to sell) but there are fewer to choose from. Better mpg by about 10%.
I'd have nothing else but auto.
All IMHO of course.____

Cant comment on the BAS remap as I have a TurboChip remap, but it has illiminated the lag completely Duncan

for me, the auto is the "marmite" bit of the car. I'd loved my manual, it was quick, you could change down of stupidly high motorway speeds and it would pull like a train, and still gave high 20's mpg, ans around town it was still mid to high 20's.
Now, the auto - silky smooth, but drinks fuel around town (high teens/low 20's), although on a steady run will come up into the high 20's. I dont have any real lag on pull away, I'd say its much quicker to 60 than the manual, but I hate the wait for the kickdown at 70mph upwards when wanting to scoot past something. I know I can command shift down, but then I could have stayed with the manual.
I know there have been clutch issues on the manuals, mine had to be fixed, but I think I'm still a manual man at heart.
saying that, moving forward (D4) its auto or nothing.

The auto box is rather good. I would never consider a manual. Plus the offroading pleasure is multiplied by a 100 with the auto. The older I get, the better I was.
Discovery 3 TDV6 Auto (BAS remap) after Defender TD4 110 Crew Cab and 1964 SIIA 88.
For me its an auto for towing. Plenty of power, great gearbox. Knock it over to Sport for the hills and overtakes. My caravan is about 1600kg and the D3 hardly knows its there, with your 1350kg it won't even worry it!!! You will find the auto so much more relaxing when towing.Run silent, run deep!!
