Since I started using Shell V Power diesel, I am getting an extra 3-4mpg (or more). Last 2 tanks on "normal" diesel were 25.2 and 26.3 mpg (according to trip computer). Last tank on Shell V Power was 28.8 and currently running on this tank @ 29.3 mpg. Not driving it any different but obviously time will tell as to long this lasts.
Ok, so Shell V Power diesel is an extra 6p per litre, but I signed up for a Shell credit card which gives me 6p a litre off for the first 60 days, then 3p a litre off after that - this could be the cheapest mpg mod you can get.
Anyone else use this stuff and noticed the same?

good mod unless the fuel goes up in price then the saving is bad. Personally the best saving at the moment is supermarkets by doing your weekly shop, spend over £50 and get 5p a litre off. Then I could'nt care whether the MPG was 23 or 28

You should care, 5p/litre is only approx 5% at my local supermarket diesel price, 28-23mpg is a 17.8% difference (coming down).... so the "saving" would be more than outweighed by the lower mpg... Cheers

have to agree
When tescos is 3p lower than Shell normal fuel and you then get another 5p it needs to he one hell of an improvement.
Only problem is I go shopping at waitrose, so end up just calling into tescos to buy drink for my discount voucher

To be honest I could'nt care how much the MPG is, or in a way how much the fuel is, unless it hits the £1.35 mark again
Aerodynamics of a brick, overweight, and always encourages us to play with the loud peddle. Grin factor worth every penny and WILL NEVER worry about the MPG

I have been using BP ultimate giving me approx 24-25mpg, with supermarket diesel it drops to about 21-23 mpg and do'snt seem to run as smoothly, I will try Shell over the next 2 or 3 tank fills to make a comparison, around here Shell is approx 2p a litre cheaper. The shell V-power sold in Germany is excellent quality.
The shell V-power sold in the czech republic is average to poor quality diesel.
This was shown in a test of several fuels sold in the czech republic.
The extra money paid for the V-power is a pure waist of money here.
Since I know that I avoid shell.
Hideaous policies they use, misleading czech customers and selling something completely different in two different countries under the same commercial name.

I've been using V.Power and Ultimate not for the mileage, but just because they both make my car drive noticeably smoother and sound so much better.
However, I filled up with Shell V.Power in Germany recently and it was totally different again? So much better than the UK stuff. My diesel was sounding like a throaty V8 within one tankfull - Can the fuel really be that different? Seems more than a coincidence as the effect disappeared as quickly as the German fuel.

I do often wonder about some of these mileage claims as the weather changes that often it is difficult to replicate the same driving conditions to get a good comparison
I think that the volumes actually bought at each filling station don't make these premium fuels as good as they claim as the logistics of delivering smaller quantities of fuel to the filling station, providing pumps and marketing it must increase the fuel companies costs so the extra cost of the fuel at the pump must reflect this so how much does the extra "oomph" add to the cost, I have noticed a variations in performance filling up with standard Shell optimax and often wonder if it was a V power delivery day and all the pumps got it
I find it interesting, to my knowledge Esso has never brought out a premium fuel to follow suit with all the other fuel companies that have I wonder why ? "Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag'em down to your level. It's cheaper".

Well when the recall for the high pressure fuel pump for the TDV6 came out, Germany, Switzerland and some other countries were not part of it and it seems this was due to fuel quality in this countries

Good point, I'd be interested to know if uk fuel is not up to the same quality because you can really feel it in my disco. It might be useful to know what the actual differences are? 2005 D3 HSE

I know its only 1 tankfull but I filled up at a Shell garage , I occassionally pass , for the xmas break.
My mpg went up to about 20-21 , I somewhat put that down to the roads being quieter. However this weeks fill up was at Morrisons (my usual tipple) and the mpg is back down to 16.
Again I sort of put this down to traffic and weather but thinking about it , its only the last 2 days that the traffic has gone back to normal levels.
Going to give Shell another try next few fill ups as its actually 1p a litre cheaper than local supermarkets and the garage is only a mile from work so not too out the way.

I have a V8 and see difference too between cheap and branded fuels. A specialist from LR Holland suggested to me run it on BP Ultimate this should give the best economy. I didn't drive enough to find out but the first impression wasn't bad. I got only little less economy driving 140km/hr from Holland to St Helens near Liverpool 880 km with an average speed off 110 km/hr . Now waiting on the speeding tickets
I would expect the fuel enomy to be less as my experience in Germany tells me that.

I use Shell because it's the garage I drive past on my way home. I am sceptical about whether there is much of difference since most of the fuel here, from whatever brand, seems to come from the same supplier.
