Turn Indicator?

Is the turn indicator oblong required to be there for its reflective properties? I understand the side light and had planned that. I have an idea of using black metallic vinyl to provide the refection req'd by DOT, or I could just wrap the whole light and let it go I guess. 2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic
