Slow to start D3 Diesel

175000 miles now on this D3 2005 which I've had from new and its been a great car. Lately it takes a little longer to start from cold. It used to start within a second of turning the key. Now it takes about 3-4 seconds. It's colder now I know but it was doing the same over the summer. It's fine when it's warm. I feel as if it's trying to tell me something which it always has done in the past before anything went wrong.

Glow plugs would be the first thought but there's no smoke when it starts. Maybe it's a fuel delivery issue.

Has anyone had a similar experience ?

Thanks for your help

At low temperatures it will take longer to start. You did not say how cold it was. The condition of the battery is also a factor in how long it will take to start especially at negative temperatures.
The Owner’s Handbook does say that “At -25 deg C the starter motor may require continuous operation for as long as 30 seconds before the engine will start”. The worst I have had is 18 months ago or so was starting the vehicle at -17 deg C which it did after a very long cranking period.

Wish it only took me 3 seconds longer to start in the cold mornings at 175,000 miles Rolling with laughter

get a new starter fitted.
I have a 2005 d3, and my brother in law bought a 2010 d4, we went out and parked next to each other and the difference in starting rpm was over 150 rpm.
My d3 starting rpm was just over 100
the d4 was nearly 280 rpm
rpm measured using the graph on a iid tool

after I booked my d3 in to have a new starter fitted at bg Land Rover near Ross and the difference in the cold was amazing the staring rpm was 287 when new.
I also don't have any working glow plugs, so down to 1 degree it starts in less than 1 second.
If the temp goes below 0 or -1 then i have to rely on the "magic button" which tells the car it above 0 and it now start about the same.
I have not tried it below -4, but the magic button does work to -4 but does take 2 or 3 seconds but it does start.
The magic button, not a bad little fix for less than a tenner Very Happy Very Happy

Thank you everyone for the helpful responses. I’m erring towards the fuel system aging and not being able to supply the initial pressure. It runs so well otherwise. Really such a smooth drive.Starter is new and battery only about 18mnths.If it is the fuel system, does anyone know what has to be done to correct this? Thanks in advance
