small battery

I have a 2014 D4 HSE, 1 large battery on near side, and a small battery on offside.
Question, what is the purpose of the small battery?

the Start Stop tech requires the second battery. big battery for many starts and small battery to keep everything else running whilst engine is off.

If the stop start mallarky is switched off, could the little battery be used as an aux battery for the like of an Engel? Or a bigger battery squeezed in?
