Just a quick update - took it to a local LR indie who swapped out old s/s battery and put the replacement I supplied in. They weren't aware they even had this 'auxiliary/stop start' battery Shocked

The tool I was missing to do it myself was, of course, a magnetic socket thingy so the bracket 'bolt/screw/nut' didn't drop away when undone!

I asked them to check with his code reader if the new one needed the car to be told - it did "New Auxillary Battery Fitted' yes/no..... so all done..

ECO warning light went out straight away - still doesn't stop/star however. So £10 to install and £46 for battery.

Thx for your responses... Thumbs Up

If SS does not work and you have no warning light it is the main large battery under charged.
If the SS does not work and you have a warning light the small battery is under charged.
Voltage test with a multi-meter only shows volts, you need amps(power) for the SS to work, I find the SS is a very good indicator of the state of the battery.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

5 years old and only done 25k miles! You are not doing sufficient mileage to keep the battery fully charged, it just shows what a good charging system the D4 has for the battery to last this long without regular supplementing charging. Buy a smart charger and put it on charge overnight once a fortnight. I can guarantee you will be buying a new large battery before next winter is out, keep us posted Thumbs Up
