'Smart key not found', no dash, doors deadlocked etc

Hello,

I apologise in advance for the long winded nature of this post but I've spent all day searching the forums for a potential solution. I have searched several threads but it is hard to get a clear answer as there seems to be so many different causes and repairs all with different symptoms.

I am new to the forum, but have had a 2015 Disco 4 HSE, Loire Blue, for 2 years now, bought with 70k and now with 89k on it and only recently had any issues or cause to take to the forums for help.

Apologies again, in advance for a long winded story but thought best to give the background in order to help find any potential cure. So, to give a full picture, the car mechanically drove 100% right up to yesterday evening, but about 3 weeks ago, during a cold snap, I noticed that it was a bit lazy to start, and began to think it was time for a new battery. It was still running the original battery, so not concerned that it was showing its age and would get to replacing it. It was booked into a local specialist for gearbox service and a few other bits and pieces (which took place yesterday), and I'd planned to ask them about the battery anyway. About 2 weeks ago, another cold morning, it threw up a Glow Plug warning light, but the car drove fine, and upon stopping and starting, the light went out and never returned. At the start of this week, it threw up a battery warning light, again not concerned, it was going in for service and I'd ask the LR specialist about a replacement battery, again appeared once, and never returned. It then threw up a smart key battery low on Thursday, again no concerns here, only a battery for the key fob so not worried, I'd replace it too.

So yesterday, all went well with the service and wheel bearing replacement, and after collecting the car, I asked about the battery, to which I was told it did show signs of being weak, being original too, it was due a change. I got into the car, and although it hadn't appeared on the way to the specialist, it was now again showing smart key battery low. I decided to stop on the way home and buy a replacement battery for the key fob and then I'd buy a replacement battery for the car at the local motor factors tomorrow (today). Smart key battery purchased and replaced in the car park, dash light out, car opens and locks as normal, car drives 100% and appears all is well. Several hours later, I drove the car for about 20mins, before parking it for an hour, at which point, when I return to the car, it wont open, wont open through keyless or through press of the buttons. I initially assume the replacement key fob battery is crap even though it was brand new, a lithium energiser battery, same as the one that had come out of it, so I head off and buy a duracell battery, unfortunately no success with this either. I used the blade to get into the car, alarm goes off etc and it wont recognise the key. It did eventually start using the emergency method, but I had no dash, no infotainment, mirrors folded in, doors all deadlocked, but it allowed me to drive it home. Today I bought a new battery, which I fitted, and still no success.

As a result, I disconnected the battery for an hr, including the smaller start/stop battery which I had replaced in May 23', then reconnected it, and still nothing. Wont recognise the key and same faults as yesterday. It mechanically ran fine yesterday even with no dash etc, but now seems to have developed a slight misfire.

I have taken the Fuse 17 out of the dashboard fusebox and Fuse 17 battery fuse box for a short duration, both intact and a quick check for all other fuses and they seem intact.

Google would lead me to believe the KVM has failed, but I can't even seem to get the short-term fix or any positive signs.

I am too scared/not knowledgable enough to try the hard reset as found on the forums etc, for fear of wrecking something, but I am keen to hear any other suggestions

If you've made it this far, thank you and I appreciate any advice going forward.

My plan is to ring the specialist on Monday and hopefully can get pointed in the right direction. To my knowledge it is coincidental that this happened on the same day it was in for a service.

Thanks

Colin

Something easy you can try, use a jump lead from -ve earth terminal of battery to a good chassis earth point and try it, also -ve earth terminal of battery to engine block and try it, the earth lead chassis to engine is known to fail, search the forum.

As per above, earth leads is an easy thing to check.

Wouldn't recommend a hard reset without known good battery, which - to me - means good connectivity, not just charge state.

Did you fit a quality battery 019? D3/4 are quite reliant on good charge. If its low when you fitted it, the resulting drop at startup can throw a few issues with the ECU'S.

I believe the root of the issue at this point is the fob. Good thinking the replacement battery was the culprit… this is common as many don’t know there is an expiry date…

But I wonder, are the contacts not clean or compressed and not adequately touching the battery?
Many of us in the jag forum have opted for changing the battery to a mildly thicker version…

FWIW.

I had a similar issue with the fob after changing the battery in it. Turned out there was a small sticker on one side which I believe tastes very bitter to stop kids putting it in their mouth. Removed the sticker and all was well Very Happy

Thanks for all the advice so far.

I haven't had time to get to look at the car today, but briefly had a nosey when walking past it, at one of the earth wires behind the driverside wheel, and it does look corroded. I assume this would maybe cause the issues then?

I ran a diagnostics on it, and it continues to bring back a U0010 and U3000 fault codes along with a few others. It is also showing no response from the KVM so I don't really know what way to move forward. I will ring the specialist tomorrow and see if they can provide any pointers.

Thanks again though and I'll keep this thread updated as I go along and hopefully once sorted, provide the fix.

By way of update - it was a busy day.

I rang the LR specialist and told them my weekend of woe, and they informed me that they had seen plenty and would need to see the car as it could be a number of issues, including an earth strap. As a result, I arranged recovery to collect it at 10.30. I decided to go and empty the car, child seat etc and went out to it, only for it, in true LR fashion, be working completely as normal. Key working in both press of the buttons and keyless, all electrics working, dash and infotainment all operational again. Like nothing had happened.

Anyway, recovery cancelled, car driven down instead, plugged in and visually checked over, cleared faults, ran it, all good on their diagnostic. They had a look at earth strap, said it was corroded and potentially at fault, so have added a secondary, brand new and apparently much better quality than OEM to hopefully prevent it.

If its the cure remains to be seen, but for now all is well

Thanks again for all advice, it was greatly appreciated.

Hopefully that's it & lucky to get the car looked at, few weeks to a month seems the norm these days.

To update this again, the earth strap fix lasted a whole 3 days, before the car lay down again with the same issues. This time, the car was recovered down to the Specialist, who had the it a number of weeks, and diagnosed the fault as KVM. The KVM was replaced with a new genuine part. Car working again for 2.5weeks, and has now lay-down again this morning in the exact same manner.

I assume at this point it must be a wiring issue, but incredibly difficult to understand why it is intermittently working and then for no real reason or change at all, it is just failing.

Anybody know where to start with this?

Thank you. I’ve had a read, and glad you got sorted.

I tried to ring the Specialist but it appears they are closed for St Patricks, so I hope I’ll have more success tomorrow. I am keen for them to take a look first before I do anything or use anyone else, as understandably it was with them to diagnose whatever fault it had a number of weeks ago. As a result, they deemed the fix to be a keyless module. Now only 2.5weeks later it has lay down with the exact same issue, I’d hope they’ll have a much better idea and be best placed to sort the problem.

The difficulty is, now the wife is losing heart in it, which I appreciate, when she doesn’t think she’d have the confidence to take it anywhere.

Sorry to hear you are having problems. Here is my experience when anything like this happens on my D4. I always either charge the battery overnight using a good CTEK charger or change the battery. It is amazing how many niggles and not connected ones, a weak battery will throw up. As an aside, have you tried turning off the Keyless entry to see if the circuit is working correctly? If the entry system is anything like the parking system, then maybe one of the antenna is earthing the system. I had a signal fault on the camera, which was traced to the rear parking sensor loom (not by a specialist, for which I spent £400 on an electrical diagnostic and £250 on a screen unit test), but by trial and error of unplugging things). If I had this problem, I would check all the antennae (unplug and plug in a new antenna) one by one to see if they are all working as a faulty one might send incorrect signals to the KVM and it therefore decides to not do anything.
