have not used other brands in an SLR but I have no issues with it. if you understand things like iso speeds, aperture, white balance etc then use in manual mode is simple. they do have auto modes which I used as I learnt to use the camera. no more complex than other P&S models to be honest. advantages are there speed and adjustability (and the fact they capture in RAW) but require more maint than a P&S although the newer breed have internal cleaning functions.
you can also get fixed lens slr's, depends on what you want to get out of them.

The great thing about digital SLR's is that you can se what seetings you've used and compare teh photos on your pc. I learnt more in a month with my DSLP than I did with a cheap film one I bought to teach myself with!
