Spot on. I had a good root around in the space yesterday afternoon and rearranged it so that nothing is touching the outside body of the car. It was quite easy in the end because there are a few ways you can wedge things in there.
I'm feeling a bit lucky at the moment that it was the banket that got hot - as well as that I keep a couple of frisbees and a wooden boomerang in there. That could quite easily have started smouldering at the temperature the metal gets.

The wife's D3 didn't have a wheel key on collection, luckily thought "where is it" before driving off. Also store it in ashtray.
Probably better in its place in the cut out by the jack... thieving little snots will raid the front of the car and strike gold if they get the locking wheel nut adapter !
You may find you or someone else has a few wheels missing too.
Just a thought
