The space where the rear AC gubbins would have been
I've been stuffing bits and bobs into that nice big space left by me not having the rear air conditioning, but when I took my plastic backed picnic blanket out of it yesterday, the edge (presumably the lower edge, but I don't know for sure) had been melted and was in a bit of a mess.
What's down there that gets hot? Is this space not safe for me to store stuff?
Had it been sitting in the sun? Hot metal on plastic blanket = a mess? The End

I have a UHF/VHF/HF radio mounted to the plastic cover with a separate head unit and have had no problems. It get's hot but not so as to melt plastic.
Some of those backed blankets use a sort of thin flexible polymer type coating, which I doubt are that robust to the heat. As Slimer suggested - might be that you've been parked directly in the sun and the metal would then get VERY hot.
That said, with the recent temperatures, I am now just going to check mine....D3 HSE V8...

Yes, darkest blue paint + direct sunlight could probably do it. And that side of the car is usually parked facing the sun. I was cleaning the car on Sunday, about 10am, and already the water was steaming off it from the heat.

I thought I was the only one stowing plastic-backed picnic blankets in there!
Will have to check mine tonight!
I would have thought that either direct sunlight or electrical wiring fault would be to blame - and hopefully not the latter.Discovery 3 tdv6 7 seat Buckingham Blue

Where is this space ? Not the one on the left with the cover is it ? I thought that was where the removable tow bar was stowed ?
Is there another cubby I have not found ?

I think it is the same cubby hole - I dont have the LR Storage thingy, so you fill it up with something else.
(Least I hope we're talking about the same space - else I'm with you..... lost)D3 HSE V8...

I'm pretty sure this is what he's on about. It's certainly where I store my picnic blanket and various bits n bobs.
The towbar stowage fits in there, but as I understand it there is also a fair amount of extra space that the rear aircon would take up if it were fitted.Discovery 3 tdv6 7 seat Buckingham Blue

Ok same space as I was thinking then. Never used it as its full of wires and rough edged metal.
Maybe some enterprising person could develop an insert to allow for storage of smaller items that would otherwise disappear into the body work ?

You could mount a container onto the plastic cover - something shape and size like I've mounted my radio. Four screws through the plastic - very neat, and I'll take and post a couple of pix - the advantage would be that when you remove the panel you have easy access to whatever you need to store. The radio weighs a couple of Kgs and the plastic holds it very securelyy - it's quite strong.D3 HSE V8...
