Spare wheel raised position.

Morning,

I’ve fitted a TF1 fixed tow bar this morning and I’m convinced that it’s impeding the spare from going up high enough.

Photos attached.

Can anyone confirm it is or isn’t in its proper place before I go and get a crobar to try and lever it in!

Many thanks

Probably it does. I fitted a fixed tow bar (Curt - a US make) that absolutely impedes the use of a full size spare. You may need to get a space saver wheel or suffer the hassle of trying to pry out the spare when needed.

It doesn't say 'full sized spare' though. My bar works fine with space saver and the fitting instructions do note that a full sized spare will not fit with the tow bar fitted.

My full size spare (255/55 19) fits just fine with a Tow Trust towbar.

Cheers all,

It does fit as after much contortion and grazed knuckles I managed to get my hands and arms inside to check the wheel was up far enough into the space provided.

As suggested I needed to get the rear of the spare wheel up into the cavity first and then use the winch to pull the front up.

I think it just looks wrong because the tow bar arms are a new piece of furniture on the landscape! Laughing

The big M16 bolt head that secures the tow bar to the chassis is what fouls the spare first.

Anyway here’s some more photos...

It looks like your wheel protector is the problem.
My RLD fits inside the wheel rim and doesn't touch the tyre at all.

What make is your protector as it doesn't look like and RLD one

There is an RLD one inside the spare but like Dondiddy said, mines a late MY16 and has this plastic/composite plate fitted also.

Incidentally I had thought about trimming that plate to aid lifting the wheel up further but there is actually not much room left for it to go upward.

I shall try to squeeze my fingers in there again tomorrow and see if it would achieve much.

I trimmed the LR plastic retainer to allow it to fit up past the TT bar, it annoyed me as it was exactly as yours, couple of swift cuts with an angle grinder and a tidy up and all was good Thumbs Up

You could always deflate the tyre a little and carry a small compressor. I have had to do this but then again my spare is a 265/65R18 (and adblue) so even half deflated requires a little wedging. If wedged make sure as you lower it to get the spare out that you keep prising the wheel weight onto the winch or you may damage it if its lowered with no weight on it Thumbs Up
