Spare Wheel Winch Stuck

Winding up the wheel winch while keeping some weight on it is very difficult on your own, especially if the wheel is having it's tyre repaired!

So my spare wheel winch will not wind down to replace the spare wheel (it's in the boot).

Any advise. Is it as easy as releasing the four lock nuts and rewinding the spool?

Here's hoping it's not an expensive fix.

Thanx in advance for all your words of wisdom.

W.

Sad to say but it sounds knackered.

It tends to happen when used without weight, so the wire inside gets itself knotted.

I took mine apart but it was fubarred.

Good news is replacement was about £90 and is just 4 bolts to remove.

There are some great repair instructions somewhere on this forum that I tried when my winch stopped working. My metal cable was kinked pretty good and I would have needed a welder to do some spot welds on the mechanism but I just said screw it and bought a new one. That link above to a replacement winch seems like a great deal because I paid $150 ( £91) for mine on ebay which was the best price I could find at the time anywhere.

You've got nothing to lose to repair it yourself and know that if it's too far gone you can just replace it easily by yourself.

I made the mistake of winding up my spare wheel cable whilst getting puncture repair I left the wheel with local garage. Getting cable back down was hard but I raised suspension. Got my girlfriend to wind the handle when I said up or down and I kept all my weight on cable. I wound it fully out and then all was well. I sprayed some wd in to keep it functioning. Mines a 2005. Ask her not to force the winding as this may cause cable to kink. Just ease it back and forwards.

I know this is an old post, but very useful to me this morning.

I had used the spare and then wound up the winch “empty” which had clearly caused it to jam or something. I realised as I tried to unwind this morning to put the spare back on and it wouldn’t lower by more than a few inches-it was completely stuck. Weight worked for me too - I was by myself so managed to improvise by using a ratchet strap to suspend the spare off the cable, and with some gentle winding/unwinding it all came loose after a couple of turns. Came out fully no problem and spare is back on securely.

Things you have to do when presented with a challenge when on your own. 😂
