Speed Limit / Camera Apps

I'm looking for an app (iphone) that I can use to warn me if I go over the speed limit, particularly when driving in new areas. Also cameras etc would be useful.

I currently use TomTom Amigo which would be perfect, albeit for 1 thing - and that is that it will only play audio out loud if using bluetooth as the audio source to the car (2014 D4 no carplay).

So if I am listening to a CD or the Radio then there is no audio from the app.

I know some apps are capable of channeling audio as a bluetooth phone call, so will still play even if listening to other sources. I really wish the TomTom amigo did this - but it cant.

Is anyone using anything that meets these criteria? I am less concerned about camera locations, more about speed limits.

thanks

Waze has all of those functions, you need to turn them on in the settings but they are there! I have all sound turned off when I use it but it does also display in the corner of the map... real time updates via other users as well...

yes I am going to give Waze a try, does it have the option to display like this?

This is what I really like about the TomTom amigo app. When driving its a really good visual indicator, it shows your speed, the speed limit, and it all goes red the second you go above the limit.

As far as I know Waze just has a small indication in the corner like google maps?

Also do the overspeed and camera alerts work if you dont have a route set?

IDK if it can do a big notification. It does a plonk sound if you’re above the set speed limit.

It does warn for cameras, road works, active speed traps reported by others (police visible or hidden), accidents ahead, etc. without you having to have entered a route. I’ve got Waze always in the foreground when driving.

I suppose I might be able to run Waze in the background for the sound alerts and the TomTom in the foreground, a bit of a faff but I will see how it goes.

I'd love to find an app that did it all

I know it's far from ideal, but if you really like TomTom you could buy a TomTom unit for £100 or less. Mount it securely and turn up the volume.

I did that with a small Road Angel unit back in the day and it worked well.

it's not TomTom I like, in fact I dont even use the app for navigation, its simply the basic free "TomTom Amigo" app which has an excellent speedometer and speed limit display.

Would those features not be replicated on a TomTom unit costing less than £100 though? One that had independent volume control, as it wouldn't be linked in anyway to the Disco.

possibly but I dont want a 3rd screen - I already have the iphone on a brodit alongside the main D4 display - all the other main Nav apps have the option to channel the audio as a phone call, pity TomTom dont listen the feedback

Yeah, a third screen is far from ideal. Thumbs Up

Waze is great. To answer your earlier question, though - no, you don't get camera alerts if not actively navigating a route (i.e. in 'free dive mode').

Perhaps you have selected it to activate it only on the route, see settings. There are plenty of things to configure. I certainly have speed camera alerts even if I do not have a trip selected. Whistle

This is what I do..

Waze running as a Nav, then Amigo overlays it. Works well for me.. Amigo shows as an overlay, which can be moved where you want by dragging.

Been using this for years on my iPhone for £20 a year.

Saved me more times than I can remember - especially good at reminding you of those sneaky smart motorway cameras - turn it on every journey without fail.

Install it from the iPhone store.
