You can setup a starling acccount in minutes on your phone, and it shouldnt take long to get the card through the post.

Im a big starling fan. I also have a full euro account through them as well.

I travel to the US frequently, and use TransferWise. You get a nice bright green debit card from them too!

And yes, I second the "ensure you're paying in dollars" comment - refuse to pay in shops that want to translate it for you!!

We went to the West coast in April, me and the wife had a Revolt card each which we could top up in seconds and transfer into $$ you get the same rate as what the banks transfer.

for larger bills like hotels I used a Nat West Credit card, no fees and good rates too.

for comparison I normally use my Barclaycard CC for work travel, I've just come back from Portland, US, and I paid my hotel with my Nat West card. I saved over £100 in fees compared to the Barclaycard !!
