There is someone on the forum who has split D4 headlights but I believe that it is very difficult to do - certainly much more so than splitting D3 units. Many (like me) buy second hand xenon units that have the LEDs built in then sell the halogen non LED units on a popular auction site. The cost to change is probably a lot less than the hassle you will have in trying to open them, get LEDs into them and then make them waterproof again.
FWIW I picked up a second hand pair of xenons with LEDs for £300 and when I get round to it hopefully will get around £100 back when I sell the halogen non LED units.
Edit sorry just seen you were talking about D3 not D4. Ignore everything I said above.

OK fishing it is ,, one down one to go ,
Bought a 12v led 45cm strip (5cm too short) from ebay ,
removed rubber bulb covers and had to dremmel a small access square hole underneath which will be glued/hard siliconed back again ,
poked round with wire coat hanger and blobs of glue to hold in place then wired into the side light bulb wires,

Indeed, well done that man
That looked a fiddle to say the least. Are you using them as straight sidelights?
If you want to use them as DRLs its a mod I've already done see here

Hi yes its the LED are off ebay called - New 12v flexible Linear LED stip for Undercar headlight ,,
from seller dock_basin . they cost £5.70 free post .(for 45cm , id would recommend getting 50cm )
They are as says on the tin really, a rubber strip with leds inside very close together so you dont have to be that accurate on positioning them , just fish them round something like and the light shines through .
they hold in place on their own but i just blobbed a couple of spots clear silicone anyway .
I compared them to a friends who has fairy lights standard in his hse and mine are 3 times brighter

Hey Ho ,
Dave,
Any news on an LED strip you bought to replace the duff one? I'm very very tempted to do this on my 2012MY XS.
I had thought that I'd split the halogen headlights and simply drop in a few white LEDs but then after much readage of the forums I realised that D4 lights are not DIY friendly like D3 lights. Foiled! Your method of cutting a wee hole for fishing purposes sounds a good plan although I'm a little hesitant about hacking into my pristine vehicle....D1 300Tdi - gone
D2 Td5 ES (Alive remapped...mmm) - sadly gone
D4 2012 SDV6 XS - Stolen
D4 2014 SDV6 HSE - Shiny
