My first serious bit of highland driving in Iceland in the Disco was last weekend on F208 - Nyrðri Fjallabaksleið. A glorious experience, with about 10 fords over 50 miles. A group of German Land Rover Experience drivers in new Discos chaperoned by a 110 were in evidence.

If you want a fantastic road that's challenging but can be done with just one car try the F35 from Tungufell Gullfoss F578 from where it meets the 518 north to the ring road near the coast at Laugarbakki. Great lava tubes to explore. Did it in a 90 in 03, fab day. Thumbs Up

Or the F338 from NE of Geyser to the southern end of the F35. We loved that bit as we were suddenly away from all the tourists and cruise ship hoards at Geyser. Thumbs Up

Will see what else I can dredge out of my memory but generally we looked at roads on the map and just headed off. We avoided the really difficult routse (F228?) and didn't do the cross the country routes. Luckily water wasn't too high but we still had it breaking over the bonnet on a couple of river crossings. Thumbs Up

Yes - I don´t want to look for trouble - not in my own car particularly! The two big cross-country routes are Kjölur (F35) and Sprengisandur (F26) and we´ll do those over the next few weeks. Rainfall has been slight here for a change so fords are currently as doable as they ever are.
