Starting problems

My D4 failed to start 3 times today, message displayed was 'press the brake pedal when starting', slight problem there, as I was pressing the brake pedal Confused been fine since then though.

Anyone had this problem?

It's going in for it's first service in a few weeks, so unless it fails altogether I'll get the dealer to look at it then.

I have not had that particular problem, but have seen it mentioned on other posts. Can happen if you have pumped the breaks before hand Question

did it just do nothing? If so then operator error mine used to do the same if i was sitting waiting with ign. on then tapping brake pedal.
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Thanks for the replies, definitely something wrong, I got in the car pressed the brake pedal and the start button at the same time and then a message came up on the display saying that I needed to press the brake pedal at the same time if I wanted to start the car.

mine did that within the first month I had it. Been fine ever since.

I think its a bit like the gearbox that learns your driving style - the brake pedal has to learn your feet Wink

Woody there was a post on that a while ago, a fault was found but cannot remeber what it was, not sure that it was the brake switch though, try doing a search.

Thanks Russell. I thought there had been a similar post, but while a search brought up a few posts, none of these matched exactly. Some were similar as the break pedal was very hard to press, but it has been fine today.

If I recall correctly from previous posts this is what can happen...
With smart key entry, you get in the car & catch the brake pedal whilst you position yourself. As the car is 'awake' it pressurises the braking system accordingly. Now, when you go to start the car the braking system is already under pressure and therefore it is more difficult to make the brake switch contact required to start the car. Apparently you really need to exert a lot of force on the pedal to start the car under these conditions.

Thanks DiscoDad, that sounds exactly like what was happening, whilst I don't remember catching the brake pedal it was extremely hard to press.

Unfortunately it's a different problem, experimented today and whilst the brake pedal will become hard to press if you press it without starting the car - it is relatively easy to press it and start the car still. So like Martin said above I think it must be a dodgy brake switch - will find out on the 19th when it goes in.
