Should I Stay or Should I Go?

If I go there will be trouble, if I stay it will be double…

An expensive month coming up for the D4 that has only done 65k miles.

LR Extended Warranty £1,280
Service £650
New Tyres £550
4 wheel alignment £70
Small rust issue £100

Adding to that, the vehicle is 6 years old so next year will be body off and belts.

I absolutely LOVE the vehicle, it is superb. I wished they still made them.

However, should I get out while I’m still winning or as the Clash suggest stick with it and risk the fact that trouble may be double in the coming years.

I need a decent tug to pull a big caravan. Used to have the original Defenders and loved them also.

I would be interested to hear from others on what they have done in a similar 6 year position.

Where would you go to?

Neither the D5 or the new Defender are direct replacements for the D4.

It's an ongoing dilemma many of us faced. I jumped to an XC90. Fantastic car, super reliable and great dealer, but its not a D4.

I'd keep it. Also belts are not a body off jump. Thumbs Up

That is the dilemma!

Tempted to jump back to a Defender 110 as the tug, but it is no way near as refined as the D4 and the turning circle is a laugh.

A full fat like you LT could be one option, but from an expenditure point of view I am probably not really going to save anything.

Yes, the XC90 could be an option, especially if you get a decent deal on one. However, I do think I would always be thinking it's not a LR.

I’m in the same situation / dilemma,
2016 D4 Landmark with 51k, owned since new but the last of the WD warranty expires in the summer, from the glory days when 2 years was £1300 😥
Realistically we’re down to a family of 2 now as all the kids have flown, we too tow a TA caravan but also downsizing that in the next month or two so purchase and running costs considered I can see a change from LR after 25 years and 8 cars ☹️

I’d really miss the D4 but an XC60 is looking like a tolerable replacement. New Defender is just crazy money if you can get one, even nearly new D5s are so expensive but I guess the D4 has only lost 30% of its value over 6 years. It’s all relative.

Keep us updated 🤔

At the moment the defender sh will be about 5-8k more than the new price due to scarcity.

Forget the LR warranty and take it to a good independent for the service and save yourself an immediate £1500.

I made a list of all the things I wanted and needed the D4 replacement to have. Which basically was everything the D4 had. Sad

Then I marked what I wasn’t prepared to do without and what I would be prepared to compromise on.

A used L405 ticked the most boxes for me. The only notable compromises being a smaller boot (it’s still big) and only 5 seats. Most importantly of all it had a split tailgate, the same upright “command“ seating/driving position with a big glass area (something the D5 doesn’t have) and with AT tyres fitted more off-road ability than I probably actually need.

Of course we’re all different and have different needs/requirements. Thumbs Up
