steering rack and ball joints. |
|
Had my disco in for MOT.. advisory on steering rack and front lower balljoints.
ball joints I could probably do no problem. steering rack... options.. any comments
replace rack with landrover remanufactured part £195 off LRweb.... lot more from stealer?????
replace track rods I beleive this too is a relatively easy task,
anyone any experience of which parts generally wear out.
thinking of changing suspension bushes, available I beleive at around £5 each but would require reallignment by stealer afterwards.

SJR, By every chance it was main stealer,
Disco Mikey you're a star!
I sense that rear suspension arm bushes (not ARB bushes) are a t*at to do and a better option is to replace the arm complete with new bushes. But fear reallignment at stealers is still required.
Isn 't it time Haynes or even LR published a manual.
Though I doubt LR will, from what I hear they can be the main stealers, a few months ago new replacement smooth leather stering wheels were £80 ish... now the're over £120, all down to LR screwing us for more profit.
They should have got the original wheel sorted ion the first place,
Rant over!!!!

Hi TLO
No leaks just wear. jacked up, wheel movement L to R both wheels, more pronounced on one side. which suggests to me NOT rack, more likely arms as you suggest. my reasoning if rack then play would be same both sides.
What I cannot understand is why qouted in excess of £300 for remanufactured rack when it is on LR site at less than £200.
Whilst I dont mind entrusting jobs to stealer, I object to what appears to be mis diagnoses and consequential excessive charges,. I will investigate further ( interrogate stealer) and report.
What are your thoughts on suspension bush replacement as DIY (competent person)
I am now suspicous of the need to replace the rear suspension arms for alleged excess play (stealer recommended complete arm replacement instead of just bushes as would be less labour charge, but parts charge of approx £70 each insted of lower parts charge for bushes)

don't even think of trying the bushes on there own, trust me i have tech's here who lie awake at night having nightmares on those poxy things
far simpler and easier to replace the arms, if your paying for it then if just one bolt is seized they could charge time taken and could be an extra hour or more on the job TLO has left the building.......

Agree with TLO
But you could always overhaul the old units at a later date and have spares in stock for next time

Cheers TLO and Brumlee. You have actually instilled a little more confidence in the stealer as you have concurred with his diagnosis, at least with the rears.
Jury still out on the steering rack issue.
TLO... How much for bottom ball joints?

Hi Harrythespider.
Had my ball joints etc go south earlier this year.
One v big tip if you change the whole wish bone make sure you have a supply of the main connecting bolt as you will probably need to grind the original off (Ford saved pence by not putting anti sieze dooffers on them) as they are on back order, or at least they were.
My indy had to get a mate at certain factory to 'borrow' 2 from a certain track, ahem.
Just a tip. All things shipping, storage, transport. UK and worldwide.
