Noticed recently an odd noise from the front when cornering, then on Saturday going round a roundabout the steering wheel seem to try to snatch out of my hands. Looked under the hood and noticed the Power Steering hydraulic fluid was low (not empty but well below minimum) Called LRA, after a couple of hours their local technician phoned to confirm when he would arrive to check out the car. After describing the problem he said he didnt even need to come and look at it, he new it was a common fault, a leak in the steering rack)
He got me a loan car (FL2) and booked a recovery.
Car was finally receovered on Tuesday (these things always seem to happen on a bank holiday weekend!).
Dealer service dept said the fault was very unusual when I told them what LRA had said, but they'd check.
Sure enough on Wednesday they confirmed leak in the steering rack, need to replace it.
Ok, so far so good, at least I have an FL2 and a diagnosis. Then........ Cant say when we can fix it because LR dont have any steering racks, dont know when they will get them!
Anyway, to the questions: Is this a common fault or something unusual, anyone had a similar problem? Are D3 and D4 steering racks the same?
Thanks.

That's pretty impressive.....I've only ever heard of one or two leaking and would say it's definitely not a common fault (well - compared to the rest of the normal suspects), but the LRA chap seems to have been on the ball... 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Been over 2 weeks now. Car is still sitting at the dealer. They cannot get the part (steering rack) to repair it and cannot even get an ETA when they will get one.
Spoke to LR Customer Assistance, they have no idea either.
I am sure the D4 production line is still running and they have steering racks for that, but none for spares?
I guess LR are more concerned about making revenue from new car deliveries than helping out someone who's already paid their money.

Thanks for that info TLO.
3 part numbers, that maybe explains why when I called back LRCS to find out status they said they had tried to expedite a part, but that the part number had been "rejected" - I guess they were asking about the first part number you mentioned!
Expecting another call back from them soon with an new update.

Just got this 'steering rack leaking' problem on my 56 plate D3. Dealer says no stock till December 2011, problem is dealers have just failed it's MOT on this fault.
Anyone know of a quick fix that might get it through its MOT until the new part arrives???
I'd consider either a reconditioned one, or failing that even a good one from a scrappers.
Cheers

Guys, small leaks can easily be fixed with Lucas power steering stop leak. Ofcourse, if you have warranty get in replaced. But out of warranty this is à great solution. CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS
