Steering wheel notch way off centre

Just helped Steve off the forum fit a heated wheel to his D4 and to my surprise when we lined the new wheel up to the notches the wheel on the test drive was way off centre. We needed to move the notch around another 20 degrees or so to line the steering wheel up with the front wheels.

So annoyed with myself that I hadn't taken a picture before taking his old wheel off for reference (all the ones I've done before have the notch 100% lined up). We were wondering whether this is something that can happen from factory or issues with track rod end tweaking. Either way with Steve still under LR warranty whether it was worth getting looked at under warranty Question

Thoughts please - old D3 thread for reference: https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic17669.html

Steering Wheel off alignment.

Hi Nick,
Thanks for all your help this morning, you are a top guy. Really nice and toasty on the old mits now.
Just thought I would check in on this post to see if any of the knowledgeable forum folk have any ideas about the cause of this?
Incidentally Nick, I need to move the wheel back one notch the other way, we slightly over corrected this morning. This can’t rely on trial and error though. Surely someone on here can give us their thoughts?

Just to add some context to this picture, the steering wheel is now aligned correctly with the wheels straight, but the notch on the steering column does not align with the notch on the steering wheel.
What can be the cause of this and is it something that I need to be concerned about?

Thanks
Steve

It means the cars alignment was set up without the steering wheel being clamped in the correct position, the car will no doubt drive straight with the notches off set, but the steering angle sensor may get upset as it will be 20° or so out unless it’s been recalibrated Thumbs Up

Unless corrected the steering alignment on lock may be way out as the side rods will be different lengths. This is not measured on a 4 wheel alignment set up, as its done straight ahead only. . Straight ahead could well be OK.
