steering wheel vibration

Hey guys,

I have a very annoying steering wheel vibration that comes on at 95kph. The odd thing is, it happens maybe 80% of the time. Sometimes, there is no vibration at all.

This vibration started before I changed my tires so I don't *think* it is a balancing issue.

I have also tried rotating the front wheels to the rear and vice a versa which, had no effect.

Any thoughts on what this could be? I was thinking control arm bushings but, I don't seem to see a lot of play in then at all then I check the wheels when off the ground and, the steering wheel has no play.

If its not a constant issue it might be an intermittent sticking front caliper causing overheating. It could also be a wheel bearing on the way out, the vibration being influenced by varying temperature hence its there sometimes and not others. Check the bearing for coarseness when rotating the wheel, or any "play"when the wheel is rocked laterally.

Beyond that, you might strip off the calipers and clean everything thoroughly, including pads and sliders. Otherwise you may end up warping a brake disc (rotor) if not already warped.

Thanks for the insightful response. The brakes are all new, calliper movement checked and OK. The bearings don't make any sound when rotating the wheels.

Now that being said, could worn control arm bushings have a similar symptom? If so, how would one test for appropriate play?

It could also be the EPB shoes not disengaging far enough intermittently. Has the EPB been serviced recently including greasing the lever on the backside of the shoes?

I have something similar and it turned out to be the front lower bushes, comes and goes depending on accelerating or coasting, can feel quite bad at times and came on very suddenly....

Had all bushes changed to Powerflex and no further issues... ride was a little firmer but mine was on springs not air and 17 inch rims so not much change...
 I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Further to my symptoms, I have noticed as of late that when I decelerate the vehicle pulls left. When I accelerate, the vehicle pulls straight again. There is no noticeable vibration when braking and, when arriving home and I check the temperature of all 4 rotors, there are no real variances. This tells me it is not dragging pads, stuck callipers etc.

To summarize;

The vehicle vibrates (the steering wheel not the seat or floor) at speeds above 80kph
The vibration is usually but not always present
The vehicle pulls left when decelerating

So, that being said, would this sound like control arm bushings?

Best diagnosis is to lie under it with a pry bar and take a look. It is clearly not braking related as your symptoms appear when either under power or deceleration.
A good look around is what is needed really...and if the pulling is as noticeable as you say, you might find your problem is obvious.

If you can get it on a ramp with wobble plates, that will show play in any of the bushes, my drivers side arm had noticeable play on above ramp yet hardly felt it on the road.
