Stereo on a D3

What stereos have people fitted to replace the original double din six disc unit please? Needs to play my music from my phone. Via aux in lead is fine. Radio and that’s it. CD player or sat nag a bonus.
Ability to talk to my apple phone good. Retaining some sort of steering wheel function control preferable. Don’t need a sat nag, single din and a cubby hole would work if the steering wheel functions can be retained.

Its not easy if you have an amp under the drivers seat. It can be done but the looms are expensive.

Expensive is a relevant term.....people are asking £175 for a used unit which can break as quickly as the old one. Can’t find anyone to repair mine so my options are limited. I figure a new unit with a guarantee and some loom Bits might be my better option. Single din and a cubby hole would work well. Can the amps fail and cause the stereo to fail to work.

Yes amps failing are a lot more common than the head unit.

What is wrong with your system?

The stereo won’t turn on. All that lights up is phone system and the volume for that will go up and down..
It did eject the six CD S for me. No radio or aux working. It’s like the stereo is dead. The clock won’t set either and that’s controlled by the stereo the book tells me.

Open car leave passenger door open. Wait for car to go to sleep. Then disconnect battery cables. Join battery cables together (use a metal wrench or similar). Wait circa 1 m with them
Connected. May hear some static but ignore that. Put cables back on to the battery. May work. May not but typically solved my stereo playing up

Looks good. I don’t really need a sat nag though. It’s the music my Mrs misses and radio 4 for me.

Thank you for the link though.

It's worth disconnecting the wiring to the steering wheel switches to see if a fault with them or the clock spring is locking up the head unit.
I once had a very similar issue to you with the head unit on my 2005 HSE, and it turned out to be the clock spring.

The switches in the wheel are not simple on/off things, they work on the principle of a resistive network, where the head unit sees different resistance values based on what buttons are pressed and reacts accordingly. That way there are only a couple of wires back to the head unit covering all the switches, not one or two for every switch.

The fault in my clockspring presented the head unit with a resistance value that emulated one of the buttons being pressed constantly, and the head unit was locked up dealing with that command and couldn't do anything else at the same time.

The Airbag needs to come out to access the cables, but there is plenty of info on here about how to do that with a special tool made from everyone's favourite stiff wire - a cut up wire coat hanger.

I have yet to disconnect the ECU unit for the phone in the car to see if it will correct the issue. If that doesn’t work I will do the steering wheel controls next. Good tip to,try, thanks.
I can’t help feeling that the car is going to need a new stereo .
Even that isn’t straight forward with daft canbus/ linked electronics. I miss the days of a simple din slot in unit to replace.

I’m presuming that disconnecting the steering wheel controls/ clock spring the reset / fix should happen if that is the fault? The radio should come back on if the steering wheel controls are at fault?
