DingMark I'd be keen to hear if the insurance company pays the agreed or market value. I had a situation a couple of years ago where a very expensive mountain bike was stolen. I had it insured for (and paid a premium for) more than what the replacement mountain bike was worth.
Movement in the Aussie dollar meant I was over insured, and the insurance company argues that they have the right to either cash settle, or replace the insured goods. They obviously chose to replace the insured goods because it was cheaper than giving me a cheque for the amount insured.
In reading my other insurance policies (for car and home) the insurance company can choose to repair/replace, or cash settle in the event of a loss and I get no say in which is chosen. 2012 MY13 SDV6 SE D4 Ipanema Sand with Almond leather

The D3 was carted away today. Yesterday it was too hot to do anything with. The fire brigade didn't want to pour water on it as the messy runoff would go into the drains & a nearby lake. To cart the remains off took a front-end loader and a dump truck. The only way it was ID'd was the bullbar had melted offthe front of the D3 and the licence plate was face down in the dirt, thereby protected. Couldn't even tell it was a vehicle - just molten lumps. This morning when it was time to see the ramains scooped up, it was obvious that someone had pried he no doubt overheaded winch off of the bullbar (they can have it as I suspect the internals are all melted). Gotta admire the dog-eat-dog world of energetic thieves, I suppose. In summary, there's no photos as they just show black lumps with bit of shine in some spots. Even the V8 engine was a puddle (guess that's what 160 litres of 98 octane fuel does to high grade alloy engine blocks).
Insurance company to date has talked only about cash payout. Dan - you're correct that they do have the option to replace in kind. In my first discussion with them I made it clear that they were more than welcome to find another Maya Gold (to match the custom trailer which they are also insuring) V8 5 seater (don't want 7) with all the custom plates, bullbar, aux fuel tank, custom water tank, etc. I had dutifully declared every last fitting on the D3 to them so they would be obligated to do so. Their response was that they couldn't possibly replace it as it was truly unique, so it'll be cash only. Moral to this story is (a) declare every last thing you do unless it will violate the insurance cover (funny how I didn't mentioned the shorter suspension sensor rods ), and (b) deliberately make the mods so time consuming to replicate that no insurer would ever want to try and re-create it.
Had a look and smell at lunchtime at a new D4 and life is suddenly not looking too bad at all. Now if it just had the rear i-diff it would be perfect. This may very well be the first D4 HSE to be equipped to travel to remote pipeline construction sites carrying heavy work kit. At least the MTR's are still safe at home! Possible to jump start the Disco3? |
|
Hi,
Pardon my ignorance, I thought all Disco3 be it manual or auto has the engine immobiliser built in. How can it be stolen?
An it is pretty difficult to tow unless with all the 4 wheels up if the electronic brake is on. without power, can we still release the brake?
Am curious.

Final update. Insurer paid out in full on 23 Dec (date when funds arrived in my bank account), which is a week after it was stolen . The quickness must be some kind of a record. Maybe someone wanted to have their desk cleared by Xmas? I couldn't find a new D4 off the floor but ordered a new HSE with rear diff, etc on 23 Dec with delivery in April (so I'll assume May). With the insurer payout, interest on the payout sitting in the bank for 5 months, and the Aussie gov't 50% investment credit on new company owned vehicles, I come out slightly ahead financially , but it's still not worth the hassle. I'm about to paste an article on the break-in in my profile photos (never mind the inconsistencies about the vehicle cost and my wife not wanting her photo shown - she's worked as a professional actor!). Note in the article photo that the only item recognisable was most of the stainless steel exhast. It was really melted down (I had lots of plastic stuff and one Pirelli Scorpion + one MTR inside which really made the fire hot).
