what the ... ? strange noise.

so ... early morning hospital appointment and rushing to get back home for a conference call.

stuck in a line of traffic and can hear a strange noise. something rattling/vibrating. starting to think it's bad enough I'm going to have to pull up and have a look. remembered the fan cowling is minus a clip at one end so it might be that. worrying it could have moved enough that the fan is touching it.

so ... traffic moves and noise goes away. we stop again and it's back. seems to be very close to matching revs. every time I move and revs increase, it goes away. worked out it's not related to pressing brakes.

ok ... I'm getting confident it's not a major issue but obviously going to have to look under the bonnet when I get home.

coming up to a major junction and ... mini in front of me turns left and noise ceases ! Laughing

conclusion is ... D4 ownership makes for paranoia !

I love my D3, but I'm constantly paranoid that I can hear noises. Bearing noises. Differential noises. Engine exploding noises. It's not easy being a discovery owner. Sad

I think we all live that same reality of permanent distrust .... mine has always been on the edge of the abyss of failure and total disaster ... and meanwhile 12 years and almost 300,000 km have passed and nothing has happened at last .... except that I am 12 years older!! Big Cry

In our case it’s known as the “effing bongs syndrome “ . Yet over 10years of ownership the d3 has never left me stranded, stressed and skint but never stranded. As an aside I have only ever seen one on a flat bed being recovered to somewhere!

noise wise it probably sounds worse than e.g. a saloon car ... it's a big cavern of space with potential for creaks and groans to be amplified beyond their true significance.

Always try to keep the radio on and the volume up. As soon as you switch it off you enter paranoia mode.

Squeaks and groans linked to crawling in traffic usually disappear when someone else turns off.
Remember years ago when a mate had a Saab, the original shape thingy. He had a noise which the mechanic diagnosed as piston slap. Mate was told to just turn up the radio and it would be OK. That's what he did.

Heard voices in mine the other day........... Shocked

Wasn't until I heard the Peter Rabbit theme tune I realised it was the DVD player I had taken off the rear headrest and hidden under the seat. My Granddaughter had been in the car a few days before and I forgot to turn it off before placing it under the passenger seat, it autoplayed as soon as the ignition was switched on.....!! Laughing

At least Land Rover had the hindsight to fit a decent audio system with speakers everywhere to drown out all the rattles and noises Laughing

I kept hearing a funny air whooshing noise last week on the way home. I couldn’t figure out what it was for ages and was getting really worried something had broken. Then I noticed the bmw in front of me looked a bit “odd”. Tinted windows and th like, Just didn’t look like a standard bmw.
I pulled over in to a lay-by to let s few car get in front and carried on.. low and beho,d the noise stopped. Laughing
A bit further up the road, I end up behind the bmw again, and I opened my window .. sure enough, every now and then, a huge wood has his dump valve opened. Rolling with laughter
