Strange Noise - Help Please!! |
|
Dear chaps and chapesses - my 55 plate TDV6 Disco HSE Auto has a strange noise and it's driving me a little bit insane!!!
The only way I can describe it is similar to a noisy clutch release bearing but......
a) It's an auto.
b) It only does it under light driving throttle! Not under heavy load and not under light load or overun - always when just maintaining speed.
c) It is not road speed related - doesn't matter how fast you're going.
d) It is difficult to hear with the windows up - wifey can't hear it anytime but I've tuned into it!!!!!
I'm wondering if it could be turbo / wastegate related or fuel pump????
With such a useless description does anyone have any idea what on earth I'm hearing?????

Hi, I have the exact same noise on mine, which is an auto, and thought like you. I’ve read a few threads on here that say the noise comes from the torque converter. Google discovery 3 torque converter noise and see if that sounds like you. Sounds like something is rattling when there is no particular load but stops when you lift off. Regards Lee.

Thanks Lee.
Mine isn't as mechanical as that and doesn't fit the other criteria (Park / Neutral) either.
When I say "like a noisy release bearing" I mean when it's at that stage before it squeals or rattles. To give another idea of the sound think very very quiet supercharger Oh god, I'm getting lost in this now!!! I've tried recording it but it can't be heard - it's too subtle!
Guess I'll just have to wait and see what drops off

Yours does sound exactly like my noise. The it’s done it since we bought it and only really noticed it when driving through the welsh mountains due to loss of radio. Anybody’s input welcome.

Dazz360 - No - or at least I can't seem to replicate it!! It needs a few revs on (1.5 - 2k) and a very light load but still some load - doesn't do it downhill for example.
Have to say, after Lee's suggestion I've been pleasantly suprised at just how quiet the car in on tick-over in any gear!!!! It really does sound incredibly sweet

Check the park brake mechanism that make some funny noises when out of adjustment
