Bit of a git replacing a contaminated belt without taking the fan off though I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Hi I just got the belt and pulley kit
Should I do the cam belt as well while I’m at it?
I see there’s 3 belts total?
And I don’t know how the alternator could be squeaking if it’s on the opposite side to where the coolant spilled?

Sorry it confused now by the advice.
So fan off to do the fan belt, pulley and idler?
If I spray liquid on the belt, the noise stops. So does that indicate it’s the belt? Or could is still be something else?
I’m presuming it’s not the alternator as coolant shouldn’t damage that?
And yes the pulley on the right side bottom seems to be moving very fast in a rocking motion. If this is a clue?
Also, while I’m at it, should I do the cam belt and oil pump? Cars on 184k and can’t see any record of the last change!

My two penneth would be.
1 buy a set of fan removal tools for the viscous fan, a new belt and if you are a long distance from anywhere who sells parts also get a a replacement tensioner/pulley.
2. remove the fan with the tools and take off the belt.
3. clean all remaining pulleys thoroughly to remove the various things you have put on there (its been a bit like the story of the old lady who swallowed a fly ) Check out the Alternator and waterpump. Then use the new belt if the tensioner is not knackered and shove everything back together
If the tensioner is knackered and has play in it, either replace entirely or alternately the bearing in the tensioner can be changed on its own if you have the means to do that.

Just for anyone who may stumble on this thread:
1. Never apply grease, oil, penetrating fluids or indeed anything that is not plain or soapy water on any driven belt.
2. Never use a penetrating spray (eg WD40) on a bearing, tensioner or indeed any mechanical part that requires lubrication. These penetrating sprays contain solvents that will attack lubricants.
3. If you think a component such as a belt or bearing has been run whilst contaminated then replacement must be considered. If you are mechanically minded you may be able to monitor and use judgement on replacements but for the vast majority of us a straight replacement is the only viable option.

Great news I’ve just randomly called the garage in the stamp book and found the cam belts not due for a while yet so I know to just do the fan belt and tensioner and idler. Learn how to get in that area. Then do the cam next year and go all the way!

Should you decide to take the fan off(best) it is left hand thread and you will then have overcome what can be(not always) a time consuming step when doing the timing belt.
The tension pulley moving excessively can be a sign the belt is ready for changing, it is unlikely spilt coolant has caused the issue. Be sure to remove ALL signs of oil and grease from the pulleys before fitting the new belt.It can when others can't,

Hi thanks and can the pulleys be spun when the fan belt is off please? Or do they need to be locked in position while the belt is off?
And isn’t the timing belt the cam belt?

The timing belt is separate nearest the engine and the pulleys must be locked with pins, you need to read much more about the timing belt before attempting to change it and the fuel pump belt at the REAR of the engine, this should be done at every 7 years or every 112k miles, read Disco Mikeys excellent post on how it is done before you attempt it.
The belt you are changing is the auxiliary belt, sometimes referred to as the serpentine belt, the pulleys can be spun and are not timed but not the drive without turning the engine. It can when others can't,

Hi thanks yes I understand. I’ll only be doing the fan belt and tensioner for now. Pray that fixes the problem!
