Stuck attaching CV boot clamp!

Changing inner CV boot front left. I left the inner part in the diff and refitted the joint back in. As such I’m now trying to clamp the new boot back on with it in place. The clamp that came with the boot from AF has a single stage position that needs to be clipped before the pincer tool is used. I can’t get the initial stage to clip on for love nor money! My current strategy is using a chain type oil filter remover to try and squeeze it tight enough for it to engage but the links are interfering with the clip as much as it is helping tighten. What am I missing here? Is there some kind of smooth tightening tool I can use to put tension on the clip or some other trick to this? Many thanks!

Dump the clips and use large tywraps much better than those cheap stupid clips.

Can’t find anywhere near me with a cable tie tensioner in stock so going to give these a go

Luckily it looks like there’s clearance for the screw.
