Stuck in Park

I know that it's probably in the manual but I though that I'd share this.

Today whilst doing a three point turn and in something of a hurry, I think that I overloaded the gearbox with too many electronic commands. Whatever I had done, it stead-fastedly stayed in Park and switching the engine off and on made no difference (at first). Gear knob rose up but wouldn't budge.

Sudden light bulb moment (literally). Let the ignition system go to sleep. The light on the gear box display will eventually go off and the system when switched on again performs as normal.

Only a minor traffic jam built up. Very Happy

I hope that info is useful

I wonder if the shift interlock is ok or perhaps the brake switch is dodgy.

Worth getting it looked at.

You don't think that too many gear changes in a short space of time could make the system throw a wobbly? Very Happy

Nope, the gearbox logic is very quick, as are the changes at around 200ms. The only thing that can stop the knob from being turned in the interlock, which is a simple solenoid.

Uh oh, that's an old problem that surfaced on the first batch of XFs. My 2008 XF had the same problem and it was eventually traced to a faulty resistor on the circuit board - mine was an early failure so they swapped out the whole module. If it is the same problem, switching it off/on again will only work a couple of times and then you'll be in a full failure situation. Mine failed totally as I backed out of the drive leaving me parked somewhat skewed across the neighbours drive - luckily they are good neighbours and jLR assistance arrived first thing next day with the spare module.

Thanks Bob. It appears that I'll have to tackle remediation sooner rather than later.

There is a relevant technical bulletin: TB00455v4

Quote:
This bulletin is issued to aid in the diagnosing of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) for the Transmission Rotary
Switch (TRS) Module. A customer may report a concern that the transmission Rotary Switch (TRS) , fail to
rise, fails to rotate out of park and or fails to rotate between gears.
Cause: There are various root causes which can make the ETS fail to respond to inputs. This bulletin shows
the various DTC's that can be stored in the ETS and the actions to take if this is the case.

To cut a long story short youhave to check the DTC's in order to find out where the problem is.
