Stuck in rutt

Not physically but it has come time to make a decision on what to do.

Morning troops...

So having just returned from abroad with a bit of lolly in my pocket ..Im trying to make a decision on what to do regarding the might steed. I have a 2005 LR3 and much to my ball and chains annoyance I love it... over the last year Ive spent around about 2.5k on new brakes front and rear .. front height snesor and air struts and a whole new EPB, rear hubs and guards etc etc....the vehicle is not in the best of raft cosmetically with a few little blemishes.

I was of the mind to go for a newer variant LR like a LR 5 or Range Rover or even a sport. However, my neighbour an avid LR fan bought a new Disco Sport 3 years ago .. got an extended warranty etc... 6 weeks ago .. he was pulling off the drive when the when the fron steering rack seared its bolts and fell through its own Censored . Long story short , and you may not be surprised, Land Rover voided the warranty and said that whilst the fault was known it hasnt been recalled in the UK but has pretty much everywhere else.

Not my neighbour isnt short a bob or two, but the trouble he has had with Land Rover is a feckin nightmare so much so that he has started to take them to trading standards, his vehicle is currently sat at inchcape with no parts to replace it due to some import issue.

The moral of the story is, given the extent of these new vehicle issues, across the range .. is it worth taking the risk in the hope I get a good un? Or do I go for another brand, Ford Ranger or similar or generally is this 'new car' fad exactly that... should I just run the LR3 till it dies (160k) or jump ship.

I am sure this isnt the first time this is discussed, but buying a D4 or newer D3 is just cleaning the slate and starting again.

I Think I know the answer but Ive always appreciated the advice of the collective on here. My head says keep, but wallet says, invest in something newer.

PS i am an outdoory type so .. it does get used for it said purpose.

Cheers Aye

Save your money and keep the D3 or upgrade to a D4

I'm not a big fan of the D5 I have had a couple at work with seized cams, all repaired under warranty but these were less than a year old.

In a similar situation so here's my plan;

Keep my D3 which is on 182k with normal servicing to date until the new defender is around three years on the market.

The New Defender is a good car and most of the options for engine placement PHEV or pure electric will be known.

You can then avoid any of the current faux Land Rovers!

Discuss! Rolling with laughter

I’d keep the D3, personally. Better the devil you know. Your mileage is ‘fairly low’ for a D3 also. Mines on 205k and runs like a clock, the dash may look like a Christmas tree on occasions, but it’s a trusty steed.

I’d prefer to have one with paintwork blemishes also, so you can use it as intended and not wince while off road. No doubt the money you put into the D3 will just be the depreciation in a newer vehicle. All IMO of course.

Sorted that typo out for you. Whistle Whistle

It’s behaviour like that from LR that will ensure that my long gone (well 2.5 years ago) D4 was my last. Even if if did get the green light from FinController, otherwise known as SWMBO, for a new Deafner, not sure I want the hassle that goes with LR ownership. Confused Confused

Me To Keep it or get a D4, I am dammed if I would buy another JLR product again.
I have had lots of them and would like a new one but its just not worth the risk.

You'll be instantly disappointed if you go the pickup truck route - you can make them look the part and can be well specced but it WILL not have the magic carpet right and lovely burbly engine

Speaking from experience having had five years of a top of the range Isuzu 2.5 Diesel (not shown in sig below Rolling Eyes ) between my Discos and Defender.

For me it’s keep the D3. D4 isn’t that much better but the engine is more fragile and expensive. D5? No ta. Everything else is a truck or a car.

Maybe in a few years time look at a new Defender when they’re a lot cheaper. If money was no object I’d probably have one now, although it’d need the jump seat to have six seats and a dog cage which the D3/4 does so well.
