A student tightwad
Okay, the boy has exceeded even my low levels of being a tight wad.
At the start of Uni in September, he took £500 cash with him. He has received £1,600 of a student loan in that time. He has saved ....... £1,600.
He has come home twice for the weekend and raided everything from Bacon to Joints of meat to Donuts. He conned my sister to take him home in her car and back again so he didn’t have to buy a train ticket. 300 mile round trip plus she bought him lunch.
Last time home he took his Grandma shopping. She normally bungs him a tenner for his petrol, which I buy for him, this time he got £40 off her plus he went for a haircut and forgot his wallet, so she forked out for that too. He can’t do any wrong in her eyes.
He’s also invited various Uncles and Aunts to see him at Uni and inevitably they take him out for a free meal.
Piece de la resistance is at home he normally uses bog roll by the dozen. I sent him away in September with a 16 pack and fully expected it to be used within a fortnight, but he is only on his second roll. Now he is either using someone else’s bog on the fly or doing a Bear Grylls with plant leaves.
You’ve got to admire the guy, but he’s taking the I am just waiting to hear of his latest exploits.
Is this something others can relate to or have I a one off?

Maybe? I don’t know how much he’s got left of his £500 cash that said, probably £499.
The student loan just gets paid into his bank, hence when he said, it equated to what he got.

I went through Uni with someone like this . Happy to forget their money , drink your beers , ride your car ....... and if they thought they may have to pay for something ( having even got to a venue ! ) they'd make an excuse and let you enter by yourself ( yeah , like you'd leave them outside ... ) . It's not a relationship that's going to last with this mindset of tightwad . PS They don't necessarily improve in adulthood or when married either ........

Indeed so. A reputation for being tight is one that doesn't lend itself to a life full of other people. Folk very quickly figure out the tight wad and they get avoided / forgotten from invites etc. Seen it before.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I don’t disagree, but it’s a behaviour that could be hard to change.
That said he might be different with his friends, I don’t know. He is popular, so maybe it’s just with us.
I blame SWMBO, she’s a soft touch regarding him. If I object, she just ignores me.

How old is he? At some stage he’ll have to learn to stand on his own two feet. As I mentioned in a previous thread, he’s running a car, that might be the place to start. If he can’t afford to do that on his own then there are buses etc.

His mother and I texted him and phoned him for his Birthday, but no response, but I know he’s fine, he was on social media.
Yes, the car, I did say something to SWMBO, but she just paid the insurance and everything else for him last week. She’s talking buying him a flat.

Is he studying for a degree that will bring in a good salary and be able to look after his poor (in the broke sense) parents when they are in their dotterage?
