Based on the replacement of 6 glowplugs for your tdv6, what has your experience been of successful extraction & replacment without complications (snapping)
What was the success rate for your TDV6 glowplug removal?
Hi,
2007 TDV6 HSE 133K
After a couple of cold mornings & lumpy starts with a bit of smoke, i've checked my glowplugs & sadly it looks as though 5 out of 6 have given up the ghost.
I'm now considering options to fix or work around this issue. Temporaily i'm thinking a manual switch / controller for the FBH to get some heat into the block to assist starting.
Alternatively it's to hand it over to the dealer or a local indy for glowplug extraction & replacment. The dealer seemed to think they stood a 80% chance of removing them all in one piece with a programme of WD40 for a fews weeks beforehand to ease the threads on the plugs. The indy resided to a number of them breaking but his success rate of drilling them seems high with head removal not really entering the conversation.
This is where the poll comes in to capture the experience of others on the forum.
I can't see this question has been asked previously, only a poll on number of failed plugs.

It's that time of year again where the D3 is a pig to start!
I almost forgot about this problem I had through the warmer months, but it's back.
To add to the poll, I wonder if there are certain plugs that appear to come out with greater success than others?
I'm thinking for example if cylinders 1,3 & 5 have a better success rate that 2,4 & 6 then i'd focus on changing these as 3 plugs must be better than none. It might also help avoid catastrophe of part loosened plugs that have snapped & need to be removed at greater cost (head / body removal)
Any thoughts?

When mine was in getting a new auto box and tc and a few other bits at a specialist.
I had him try the plugs after getting soaked all weekend, not one came free.
I did say for him not to force them too hard.
A set of injectors has helped it start better but I know it will need the plugs changed.
I don’t think there is any real method for getting them out. They either come, or they snap.

When my engine failed D-M decided to see how many of the glow plugs would come out without breaking, purely out of interest. 5 of the 6 were straightforward, but he stopped at the sixth as it felt 'dodgy'. However, application of a suitable magic spray and it also came out OK. I think we were both surprised given that they hadn't been touched in over 180k miles.Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

The RH drivers side bank are easier to get tool into.
It's also (a bit) easier to remove the RH head should they break. (due to no fuel pump belt drive)

Sensible answers from both the dealer and indy. Indeed, it is refreshing to see a dealer with the patience for a meaningful prep process.
Technique and time are at play here. I have a 100% record but to achieve this takes time and discipline, something that may not be in abundance in a commercial setting. Breaking the thread bond is not difficult with pre-treatment but beyond that the tip swell and carbon are the real tricky part. One pro-tip I use is to relax back the pressure when you get to the point of them not budging at the max allowable torque (the repeated tighten and release cycle). Leaving them slightly backed-off and going for a drive seems to work wonders.
The mantra has to be to stay below the torque limit whilst repeating to yourself that you are not bothered if this one does not come free this time around. In a commercial setting with the tools to remove broken plugs the technique will be different but for a home mechanic time, technique and patience are the key factors.

Even with all the patience in the world, if the tip falls into the cylinder, it's still head/s off
Attempted a set this week. 2x came out no problem, 2x unscrewed from the threads, but the bodies were absolutely solid, 2x had no chance of moving
Plugs were left soaking for a week, and attempted on a stone cold engine. After powering the only working glow plug for a few seconds, it did not want to budge at all...My D3 Build Thread

Of the five my indy eventually had a crack at removing, all 5 came out without incident. He was sure that pre treatment with WD40 externally for a number of weeks & the fact I run the car with Millers Eco Max treatment helped reduce any carbon build up internally.

Just put your lips together and hum whilst mouthing an “M”....
I had a go at my cars glow plugs last week. None broken, 3 removed with a low torque impact tool, I will have to return for he last 3. Lots of “Kroil” penetrating fluid used

Did mine on my 2006 HSE - 100K on the clock a few weeks back. all 6 originals span out pretty easy - prior to the removal i have been using a diesel additive for a few months - this could be a factor in helping them remove easy ?
perhaps some of the other guys that add 2-stroke and other additives to their tanks could comment on their plug removal experience

Rich,
I'd been running 500ml of 2SO per tank for 12 months prior to getting the plugs done. Workshop tried the 4 "easy" ones and they all snapped. They gave up and called in the man with the drill. So, I just got 4 replaced but the car has been starting really well in the recent cold snap.

I've never used 2so
its had a "replacement /recon" engine at 180000 miles I think it was, its now on just under 260000 miles
and I did mine the other weekend,
I'm pretty sure the engine I had fitted was maybe just a second hand serviced engine so perhaps the glowplugs had been changed but then again maybe not
I Did them with the engine cold which I think is best
4 came out as if they had just been put in
1 the middle one on the right as you stand at the front was very tight and creaky but after gentle back and forth I got the threads undone then gently levered it up a bit then sprayed more penetrating spray in and kept working it and it eventually came out
the last one, the awkward one as its described didn't look too awkward after stripping and even looked as though it may have come out past the hpfp I think it is that people have said needed to be removed
anyway this one was mega tight and after a few attempts it felt like it was going to twist off so I just left it
its been starting fine since,
it was -6 this morning and one cycle of heaters and away she went, a little bit chuggy for the first 5 seconds maybe but overall I'm happy before I changed em it was always the hot tap water over the sensor, but SWMBO was fed up of opening the bonnet
