Mr. Green (Wastegates are not needed on variable-vane turbos)

Just to worry you even more, my auto-box slips as well (needs a new torque convertor), so it could well be related if I assume that I never noticed the over-run noise when the TC was working correctly a couple of years ago.

No sign of the mechanical gurus on this thread though...... Confused

I would have thought "sucking" in the thread title might have attracted more people...... Whistle

Seems like a dead one. Strange that nobody has any solution.

Hi i also have a simular noise its nearly always there to be heard but most noticable on deceleration seems to come from under the car drivers side, mechanic at stratstone L/R cheltenham couldnt here it and said every things sounds fine Question but it could be the turbo gate opening and closing as this can be heard through the air intake in the wing he said Confused .. It does sound like a noisy electric actuator drive, moving position inaccordance with accelerator pedal position, only when engine has warmed up its real anoying especialy when the windows down. Can anyone please help with a diagnose 2.7d auto 55 hse 24mpg av

Well, it was a while ago that i started this thread, and most replies pointed at the wastegate on the turbo. I recently had the turbo replaced, and the sound is still there!

Back to the drawing board...

I also get this hissing noise, but i was told these turbos dont have a waste gate as they have a variable vane turbo controled by a motor but i may be wrong, i am also sufering lack of power below 2000rpm, hope somone has the answer to this

Hi Lunar.

It's a strange one this! My hissing sound usually happens on decelleration, but it appears sometimes when just cruising along, i can get it to go off by just accellerating or decellerating. It usually comes back though. Your lack of power could be the EGR's, mine were replaced last year, so the sound isn't to do with them either.

It could be the brake vacuum pump or a hose to or from that. It's at the back of the engine on the driver's side. Or it could be the brake servo hissing? Both are close to the driver, maybe that is what you can hear? Other than a waste gate or an induction pipe to the turbo I have no idea. If as it seems there is no waste gate then that's one thing less to strike off the list.

I have an auto and I have no hissing noise when slowing down or any other time.

From the workshop manual describing the turbo...

The variable vane turbocharger, fitted to the LH exhaust manifold of the TdV6 engine, makes it possible to vary the exhaust gas flow of the turbine, dependent on engine operation. This improves the power transfer to the turbine wheel and compressor, particularly at low engine speeds, thus increasing the boost pressure. The guide vanes are opened progressively as the engine speed increases so that the power transfer always remains in balance with the required charger speed and the required boost pressure level. Variable vanes facilitate better use of the exhaust gas energy so as to further improve the efficiency of the turbocharger and thus of the engine, compared to the more conventional 'wastegate control'.

Does any one with a manual gearbox have this fault?
Another test maybe to slip the gear selector into neutral for a few seconds when the vehicle is making the noise, this should eliminate the gearbox, but try this at your own risk Thumbs Up I have accidentally knocked the selector out of drive while traveling, but for anyone who does try it be extremely careful not to go far with the selector lever Shocked

EDIT: Every reply on this post has been made by an Auto owner, so the next question is how many are experiencing this noise who have had a gear box oil change or flush?- it may just be related.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I did the gear box oil change plus fitted the metal pan. But, this noise started to develop before. So I don't think related to the work on the gear. As well, oil coming out was very good and clean. And no metal on the magnets..
