Sudden engine stop, crankshaft position sensor? |
|
Big scare yesterday: after 220 km of motorway and roads without problem I passed a mountain pass with quite a few bends and at the exit of the pass in a straight line going downhill suddenly the engine stopped.
I managed to park on the side
On the Dashboard :
HDC not available message ,F signal on and orange suspension light.
I tried to restart, the engine running but it won't start
I was still 60 km from my destination with my dog and a lot of luggage
I turn everything off and wait 5 minutes but it doesn't restart...
Luckily I had my gap odb tool
And I see the following faults :
Body Control
* B1B02-28 (2F) Low frequency coil - General signal failure - signal bias level is out of range/zero adjustment failure
( at 195340 km )
* B1C57-14 (6C) Passive start ignition relay coil circuit - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground or open
( at 195340 km )
* B1D12-15 (2E) Volumetric alarm power circuit - General electrical failure - circuit short to battery or open
( at 195340 km )
* U0155-87 (28) LCD Gauge Communication Lost - Bus signal/message failure - missing a message
( at 195340 km )
Engine TDV6
* P0336-00 (6C) Crankshaft position sensor A circuit range/performance
Instrument Pack
* U0102-87 (28) Lost communication with transfer case control module - Bus signal/message failure - missing a message
* U0132-87 (28) Lost communication with ride level control module - Bus signal/message failure - missing a message
Parking Brake
* U0101-87 (EB) Lost communication with transmission control module - Bus signal/message failure - missing a message

* U0100-87 (EB) Lost communication with engine control module/powertrain control module 'A' - Bus signal/message failure - missing a message
( at 197840 km )
Suspension
* C1A35-01 (2E) Reservoir valve - General failure information - general electrical failure
( at 195340 km )
Transmission
* U0401-86 (AF) Invalid data received from engine control module/powertrain control module - Bus signal/message failure - signal is invalid
( at 197840 km )
Vehicle Dynamic
* U0402-68 (08) Invalid data received from transmission control module - Algorithm based failure - event information
( at 195778 km )
* U0401-68 (0B) Invalid data received from engine control module/powertrain control module - Algorithm based failure - event information
( at 197840 km )
I cleared the faults and was able to restart and do 60 km without problem
Now I'm worried, where did this come from and can it happen again?
The error code that bothers me the most is:
Engine TDV6
* P0336-00 (6C) Crankshaft position sensor A circuit range/performance

Possible loose battery or earth wire. Some vehicles had the positive wire to the starter motor rub on the front diff.

Crankshaft position sensor does seam most likely. I think they tend to fail when hot
Not a nice sensor to change though. But I guess it maybe worth purchasing one

no, it doesn't look easy to replace.
Is there any simple solution to test it?
what is surprising is that by clearing the fault I was able to restart and drive for 60 km…

I checked the battery and the starter wiring which do not seem to be the cause.
I read a lot of posts about replacing the CKP
it seems that this can be done without removing the gearbox
but it's not simple
how to eliminate other possible causes before embarking on this adventure?
Since I cleared the faults, none reappeared and the engine started very well
That said, I'm a little afraid of riding too far…

With diagnostic tool eg gap IID or ap200 you can read the crank sensor speed with engine running.
Do it now while you can.
Then in the fault returns, see if it’s 0 while cranking.
Also check it while cranking when it’s working

Thanks again Pete for your help.
when starting I saw 100 once and the next time 140 rpm
but hey it's very fast because the engine starts immediately
once started the engine oscillates between 740 and 760 rpm
while driving I did not notice any specific variation
What conclusions can I draw from this?

Well now you know that the GAP IID tool crank live values works. (not all of them do)
So next time it won't start, you can repeat the exercise and see if it reads 0 while cranking. That would confirm it.
The exact value you get while cranking will depend on battery level and engine temperature etc.
As long as it's not reading zero, that is good.
You could also check the cam shaft speed. Save both live values to your favourites.
Cam speed should be half the crank speed.
Other things you could do if you wanted.
1) Inspect the crank sensor connector, to ensure pins clean etc. and familarise yourself with its location.

2) purchase a crank sensor and keep it in the car, so a garage can fit it if you break down
Try a citroen or pegeuot garage if you live in france, as they use the same engine.
