Sudden oil pressure loss

An odd problem with one of our D4s. 2014 HSE Lux. Parked up after the daily commute, no issues all. behaving perfectly. A couple of hours later restarted to move it a few feet on the drive. Usually there is the usual ticking of the hydraulic tappets for a few seconds. This time the tapping didn't stop and the oil light came on. Promptly switched off. No knocks bangs or rattles. Checked the oil level and it is at maximum.

Plugged in the GAP tool.. no faults beyond a misting sensor so nothing to note there

Opened up the oil filter and checked for shiny fragments. Absolutely clean. Disconnected all the injector plugs and cranked it on the starter. All turning fine, nothing out of the ordinary. No broken belts or shot tensioners. No noises what ever.

Took out the oil pressure switch and cranked the engine over again expecting oil to squirt out copiously, nothing, not a drop. Remembering that the oil filter had been opened up cranked again for a little longer. Still nothing. The motor turns freely, isn't knocking , has plenty of oil and gives no indication of a major crank failure. Just no oil circulation at all.

Current thinking is that it may be a defective oil pump or the oil pickup has failed in some way. Removal of the oil pump and the sump pan is next in line. The oil pump is still being driven for sure and, even if there were a catastrophic failure elsewhere, there would still be oil being pumped. Except there isn't.

Anyone else experienced circulation issues etc?
