With studs, Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 (on the Volvo) and 9 SUV (on the disco)
Without studs, Pirelli AT+ although I did change to Nokian 9 SUV after excessive icing last January and drove with them for a few months. The AT+ is ok on snow but on ice studs give much better grip Thumbs Up

For full on winter tyres you can’t go wrong as a few have said with Continentals offering and I’ve also seen real good performance on Nokian as well on a few different vehicles. For the moment I’ve got some GG AT3’s for the winter months and the off Offroad days. They have worked great through the winter and never had a problem.

All the above said my favourite winter tyres so far has been Michelin Pilot Alpin I had on a new Audi A6.

The the largest Finnish car magazine here ranked winter tires as follows (top four only):

1. CONTINENTAL VikingContact 7 (7,9 p.)
2. GOODYEAR UltraGrip Ice 2 (7,8 p.)
3. NOKIAN Hakkapeliitta R3 (7,7 p.)
4. MICHELIN X-Ice Snow (7,2 p.)

And studded (which I guess aren’t available in most of Europe):

1. NOKIAN Hakkapeliitta 10 (8,8 p.)
2. GOODYEAR UltraGrip Arctic 2 (8,7 p.)
3. MICHELIN X-Ice North 4 (8,6 p.)
4. PIRELLI Ice Zero 2 (8,5 p.)

Even if available, they aren't legal in the UK on public roads.

Hi

Remember that the non studded list is for nordic conditions and not typically the best in the rest of Europe. The Nordic tyres are optimised for much lower temperatures than the european tyres.

On my D4 I have Conti VikingContact when going to northern Sweden where -20 to -30 is not unusual. Going south to the alps I change to European winter tyres, new for this year is a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 (255/55-20). Previously I have had Pirelli Scorpion Winter in the alps and was impressed by how good they were both at high speed and on snow and ice.

Looking forward to test out the Michelins this winter.

/Jeppe

Debatable.
I am led to believe that studs are covered by the same law as chains, as long as there is snow and not tarmac you’re ok. but have them on tarmac then you’re in trouble.
But I don’t reckon we have enough snow to warrant them and standard three peaks winters are adequate.

Continental, say ok, but this is Trucks. But they maybe biased.

Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice.

Studded tyres allowed, but only on snow & ice covered roads, and as long as the street surface does not get damaged. Otherwise a regress is possible.
