Suspension Coincidence?

I was thinking last night that the disco has been quiet.

BONG

Suspension error - normal height only.

I read the code when I stopped which returned C1A20-64 (AF) Pressure increases too slow when filling reservoir...

This points to a leak somewhere which is fair enough, I can work with that. I cleared the code and decided to take a look at the live values, and while doing this I raised the car to off road height. Everything was fine until I went to lower it again and it went into extended mode which I finally resolved after a few attempts to lower it and a few refusals. It drove ok this morning until I parked it up with the engine running at which point there was a noisy vibration from underneath and the suspension error again. I tested the off road to normal height change and got the same extended mode problem, so my question is:

Is it likely that these errors are related compressor/dryer/reservoir problems or can the extended mode problem only be caused by a coincidentally failing height sensor?

Just looking for pointers on where to start.

extended mode can be caused by

1. Suspension requiring calibration
2. blocked/restricted exhaust valve

So I would inspect tank for leaks and get it calibration first

Cheers Pete. I'll go and take a look at the height sensor calibration on the nice flat work car park at lunch time.

Ok. Back to this.

Still getting extended mode lowering from off road but also slow raising from access now...

Sensor calibration looks fine to me but the compressor is on the way out. Every drive (that’s long enough) I get the “normal height” message after the compressor has tried and failed to make it the last 100kpa towards 1700.

What I’ve noticed while watching a lot of live values over the past week is that whatever pressure the gallery does reach it then begins to slowly drop. Is that normal/expected or should I be looking for a leak at the same time as replacing the compressor? If so, where is common? Valve block?

I’m going to do the compressor and look at the extended mode issue afterwards if it’s still there.

Could be a tank leak under the passenger side.

Get some soapy water over places after running it and see if u get bubbles.

I had this problem in December last and for me the giveaway was the noisy compressor. So after a bit of thought I reasoned the dryer might be the cause of the system taking too long to fill.

I ordered new silicone beads, filters, relevant seals and pipes. It took about an hour to do if memory serves me right. I also removed and washed the intake air filter located inside the rear L/H trim panel (where the tow pack fuses are) No issues since, and the Compressor returned to quiet running after the gunge and old silicone media was removed/replaced.

I should also add, this issue appeared a few years ago with same symptoms. At that time there was a leak in the reservoir tank which could just be heard when kneeling beside the passenger door. A new tank resolved the problem. Hope this helps.

Thanks chaps. Great advice. I’ll get underneath tomorrow and check the tank.

Just to round this one out, I got a new dryer cover and beads to service the compressor but before I could get to it the compressor failed and took the fuse with it and added the Special Programmes Unavailable message to the Normal Height Only one. A different error about electrical ground was stored.

I decided at that point I may as well change the unit for an AMK one.

I had to wait a couple of days for fitting and left the car sitting parked up and it stayed level which sort of indicated it was pretty airtight so I didn't go looking for any leaks.

New compressor went on yesterday with a software update and now everything is sorted. The car raises and lowers quickly without errors or extended mode, the compressor runs for a comparatively short time and other than a slightly different note to the unit I can't tell the difference.

I now have a spare dryer overhaul kit if anyone is interested.
