Suspension Dealership Fiasco |
|
Less than a month ago, we took the LR3 to our 'local' (1.5 hours away) dealer to diagnose a suspension fault. Primarily it was the amber fault, but occasionally the red warning had come on and once the car did lowered to the bump stops. The dealer diagnosed a compressor 'internal leak.'
I removed the compressor cover and started the LR3. The compressor came on, and clearly was leaking air as I could feel it blowing on my face. When the compressor finally would shut off after a minute or so, the amber fault would simultaneously illuminate. With the car off, you could hear air hissing out of somewhere.
By spraying a soapy mixture in the area where the leak seemed to be coming from, it became obvious the the blue fitting coming from the air dryer was the source of the leak.
We made an appointment at the same dealer, who happened to have a new dryer unit and they agreed to install it.
Initially it seemed we had saved considerable money by replacing the dryer, which came with new fittings and thus eliminating the leak, instead of replacing the entire compressor. Unfortunately, the problem is now worse.
There were no fault lights the whole way home, but the message center continually read "car will raise when compressor cools." It turns out the back was up and the front was down most of the way home. At this point, the compressor will not turn on, and the front is down and the back is up. How long does it take for the compressor to cool?
Later tonight I plan on removing the cover and making sure there is indeed a new dryer in place, and that there is no air leaking from anywhere. I also know the relay jumper procedure to manually turn the compressor on.
We will see what happens. When the car went to the dealer this morning it was level and smooth. Now it is all cockeyed and has a very bumpy ride on the front. Anybody know why this could happen just from changing the dryer. We never got the overheat messages before. Current Rovers:

I notice it's an '05. When I first got my truck new years ago (also an '05) the compressors back then had issues. LR actually has a new compressor that they put in. Mine was replaced under warranty (twice actually, one with the "old style" compressor, and then again with the "new style"). That, plus a software update, fixed all of my problems.
Haven't had a single problem with the suspension since, almost 4 years ago, even beating the truck up off road all the time.
I would find out if your compressor really is the older style. I am guessing you are out of warranty by now, but if not, there should be a Technical Service Bulletin out that lets the dealer replace it under warranty. 2005 LR3 HSE - ARB Bumper, Warn XD9000, Custom Rock Sliders and Skid Plates, BBS Faultmate MSV-2 Extreme, Kenwood TMD-700, etc, etc,

Yeah, out of warranty so trying to save money by working on it myself. The dealer has no interest in taking apart the compressor to see if it can be fixed; they just want to replace it as a unit.
I noticed everything is made in Japan related to the compressor. Current Rovers:

Mine is a June 05 build and had the compressor replaced early on with the newer model (which is the current model). That one still only lasted about 100,000km before dying. Have a nice day!

"Only" 100,000km? That's more than our original has on it. Although I think the life of these things should be about 100,000 miles at least. Current Rovers:
