Suspension movement - how does it work?

The suspension of a D4 uses control arms. These are fixed at one end and rotate through an angle to allow the wheel to go up and down. Does this also cause a certain amount of horizontal movement of the wheel? Or does the suspension have a way of absorbing the horizontal travel?

Thanks
