Swapped towing electrics

I've bought a new (to me) caravan and needed to change the N and S 12 pin sockets on the Disco for the newer 13 pin socket. I bought the genuine 13 pin towing electrics kit from Beadles via Ebay (cheaper than anyone else it seems!) and completed the swap in a morning.

I didn't take the bumper off so it was rather fiddly. The kit comes in two halves so I only needed to change the bottom half (with the socket on) since the top half was already there and can be re-used.

Once I'd skinned my knuckles sufficiently, the job wasn't too bad. I gave myself a mental slap when i was trying to figure out why everything was working except the left indicator was flashing too fast. Looking at the back of the car, and on the phone to my mate, he suggested i might have a blown bulb. No, i hadn't put the rear light cluster back at this point!! It all tested out ok in the end.

I'll have a complete 12 n and s kit in the for sale section soon.

Just need the caravan next weekend now. Can't wait!

This is a job I have got to do soon-getting fed up with the adaptor loom. Where did you mount the new socket? Does it fit in the same place as the 12n/12s ?

Yep, just pulled the old sockets out and bolted the 13 pin socket in the right hand hole as you look at the back of the car.

With hindsight, I probably would have put the socket in the left hole; this would have given me a bit more slack on the cable to get it connected. I don't know if this would have worked but I can't see why not.

It won't fit in the left hole, I think you'd need to make up a new mount plate to fit Thumbs Up

@ jarvis - yes I did, worked fine.

Also, I have my 13pin in the left hand hole as its easier to connect the caravan to this side, just use the plate that comes with the socket.

Is there anything special about the genuine LR 13 pin socket or can I just buy a generic 13pin socket to replace my current twin socket setup Question

there's nother special about the socket, so if you are OK with a bit of wiring, you can discconect the wires from the 12 S&N sockets and rewire into the 13pin (thats what I did on my old D4). You will just need the adaptor plate from behind the 12S (I think) in order to fit the 13pin in the left hand hole if thats what you want.

Thanks for that - £6 for a new socket sounds much better than nearly £100 for a new lower loom Thumbs Up
