switch mecatronic between a TDV6 and a V8 Transmission

Hello everyone,

I drive a 05 V8 and the tranny start to have trouble in reverse etc... I went to check it out and it need a repair or a swap.

A new one is expensive, therefore I was wondering if I could by a 2,7 TDV6 one and swap the mecatronic unit. Is it doable ? I mean, both transmission are 6HP26X the only difference will be the torque converter (which I will buy a new one) and the mecatronic unit.

If anyone used to ZF transmission could enlighten me, would be awesome thank you !

They aren’t very reliable second hand, so maybe see if you can get yours rebuilt locally ?
At a zf place

well I can get one super cheap, the idea was to get the cheap one rebuilt and then swap my mecatronic. I don't wanna stay without my car long. Need it for work. Wanted to swap the gearbox myself.

You can swop the mechatronic unit over, no need to change the entire box

I've recently done it, but was advised to get the unit from the same year car and same engine, then it will be just fit and play.

My unit came from an RRS, but was the same engine and year as my D4.

well that's my problem, hard to find one from a V8 in europe. Ton's of them in the US. Hence my idea of swaping from a TDV6 one and replacing the mecatronic unit from the original one.

Mechatronic itself can be overhauled, it's a cheaper than swap to a new transmission and is a simple job.

The mechatronic is the ECU for the trans and the valve body is the mechanical side with the solenoid valves, you can swap either the whole complete unit and then have the TCM flashed with your vib or you fit your mechatronic over to a donor valve body.
Would be better to keeps yours and fit a sonnax zip kit, new separator plate and new solenoids.

I suspect the OP thinks the gearbox is the fault, not the megatronics.
Keeping the megatronics with the car as it’s vin coded

Yes so he will need to swap the mechatronic onto the replacement trans's valvebody or swap his complete valve body into the trans.

thank you Sidestick, i've seen this video, very interesting indeed.

Yes my plan was to rebuild my mecatronic/valve body or have it rebuilt by a pro. Problem is the time. I'm pretty sure my mecatronic is not the problem, when I had my gearbox checked before considering swaping it the ZF specialist said it was as o-ring problem/gasket in one of the planetary. Nothing related to mecatronic. But after 320'000km I think its time to refresh all this mess down there.

Doing it myself, I would consider it if I can get a super cheap 6hp26x in a good state that I would have rebuilt by a pro, without the mecatronic unit, and then swap my rebuilt by myself mecatronic unit onto it.

And also keep my valve body with my mecatronic. I absolutely wanna avoid reprogramming the mecatronic, don't have the special took and don't wanna pay a LR dealer for doing it wrong...
