Thanks Dean. Maybe I'm just not getting the multimeter probe into the connector properly. Might try trial and error scotchlocks on the wires. All are black, but one is a little thicker so maybe that's the feed...
Did you power directly from that or use it to switch a relay handling the full power? They're LED so current should be low.
Lastly, assume you didn't need to put a fuse into the fuseboard anywhere, to make the smog connector live?MY2012 D4 HSE in Siberian Silver, 1967 MGB

You do need the engine to be switched on and you should have power for about 20 seconds after switched off, well you did on mine.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Aha - the engine needs to be on?! That could explain it!
I've been trying with engine off but ignition on (dashboard all lit up). Doh!
Don't suppose you know which pin/ wire it is, by any chance? Mine are all black, which doesn't help...MY2012 D4 HSE in Siberian Silver, 1967 MGB

Yes! That was the problem; engine needed to be running, as you mentioned.
Thanks both - invaluable advice!
I took a piccy of the wire I cut to take the feed from, so the next person finds it a bit easier:
